Health and WellnessTherapies and complementary medicine Reflexology
Reflexology is a holistic therapy that has been practised for around 5,000 years originating from ancient Egypt, China and Greece. It works on pressure points on feet, hands and ears, influencing the function of the organs, glands, bones and muscles that correspond to these parts of the body.
How does it work?
The action of stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands helps open up blocked energy pathways by stimulating the circulatory, eliminatory and immune systems. As a result, specific bodily and muscular functions are improved together with increased circulation.
Ear reflexology is also used for clearing infections, lowering blood pressure and balancing hormones. It is commonly used with foot and hand reflexology to confirm diagnosis suggested by imbalances in feet and hand reflex points.
What does it treat?
Reflexology is a beneficial and relaxing therapy, and has successfully treated the following disorders: migraine, sinus problems, hormonal imbalances, breathing disorders, digestive problems, circulatory problems, back problems, depression, asthma and tension and stress.
What else should I know?
There are no contraindications with reflexology. Reflexology does not claim to diagnose, prescribe or cure any medical condition. After treatment, patients' reactions may differ. Most feel relaxed and a sense of wellbeing, while as part of the healing process it may be normal to feel lethargic, nauseous or tearful.
