Health and WellnessTherapies and complementary medicine Flotation
Flotation therapy consists of floating in an enclosed tank with approximately 25 cm of warm, salted water (to help aid flotation). There is no light inside the tank, and you may be given ear plugs to block out sound or there may be speakers for you to listen to music or relaxation tapes.
This therapy was devised by Dr. John Lilly, who was a neurophysiologist and psychoanalyst, who was researching the effects of depriving the brain from all external stimuli.
Being isolated from any external distractions induces a deep state of relaxation. Flotation lasts for up to 2 hours.
What to expect
You are enclosed in a tank of about 2.5m long and 1.25m wide, containing around 25cm of warm water added with minerals and salt. Sessions are from 1-2 hours long, and you may choose to be completely naked.
While floating, the mind will reach a deep state of relaxation (similar to just before you fall asleep, or to a state of deep meditation), which induces a release of endorphins. These hormones promote feelings of wellbeing, lucidity and tranquility.
What does it treat?
The effects of peace and tranquility induced by the release of endorphins may help in the treatment of stress (and therefore reduce blood pressure and heart rate), depression, addiction and anxiety. Flotation is also said to improve concentration and creativity.
What else should I know?
Floating may not be for everybody, and it may take a couple of sessions for you to adapt to the surroundings and be able to fully relax, both mentally and physically. This therapy is not advised for those suffering from claustrophobia or any mental disturbances.
There are some centers which provide "float rooms", rather than float tanks. These rooms allow you to stand up inside them.
