Health and WellnessTherapies and complementary medicine Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, extracted from plants for psychological and physical well-being. These oils may be inhaled - stimulating the olfactory centers in the nose and brain, or massaged into the skin - passing into the bloodstream and influencing the nervous system, emotional and mental state of being.

The use of aromatherapy dates back to more than 5,000 years ago. It was originally practiced by the Egyptians who extracted oils from aromatic plants for embalming, and for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.

Today, aromatherapy as a complementary therapy is one that is widely practiced. It is easy, effective and readily available. Scented candles, bath and body products containing essential oils, are all ways for us to enjoy aromatherapy and its calming benefits of joining the mind, body and spirit.

How is aromatherapy used?

Humidifiers, vaporizers and burners are used for inhalation (just add a few drops), or a couple of drops of oils can be added to a handkerchief. For steam inhalation place a few drops of essential oil into a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam for 5 to 10 minutes (depending on how you feel).

Steam inhalation is not recommended for asthmatics.

For baths, approximately 10 drops of essential oil are added to the water. Move the water about, so that the scent is released with the steam.

Aromatherapy provides wonderful relief for tired, sore feet. For a soothing foot bath, fill a bowl with warm water and add a couple of drops of peppermint oil.

Essential oils always need to be diluted with a "carrier" oil for massages and skin care (however, most shops sell these oils already blended).

What does it treat?

Aromatherapy is used to treat a wide range of ailments and conditions. There are oils to remedy state of mind (anxiety, stress, postnatal depression, panic attacks, grief) and oils for body conditions (skin conditions, colds & flu, constipation, immune system, circulation).
