Acupuncture is a system of healing that has been practiced for thousands of years in the Far East. It is a holistic approach to help manage disease, maintain health and promote equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.

The Chinese believe in the body's motivating energy - known as "Qi". Our qi is composed of equal and opposite qualities, Yin and Yang. When these become unbalanced the energy flow may be corrected by the insertion of the needles in selected areas of the skin. An imbalance in our energy flow may be caused by factors such as stress, weather conditions, fear, anger, and so on.

How does it work?

Traditionally, the needles were thought to open "blocked" areas and improve the flow of energy. Energy channels are adjusted by the insertion of needles, with the effect of improving vitality and energy levels. At the insertion of a needle, endorphins are also released, providing pain relief and feeling of well being.

The insertion of the needles will feel like a small ache or a tingling sensation.

What does it treat?

Acupuncture is used to treat muscular and nervous system disorders (headaches, migraines, arthritis), ear, nose and throat disorders, respiratory disorders (asthma), gastrointestinal disorders (ulcers, diarrhea, constipation) and gynecological disorders (PMS, menopausal symptoms, labor pain). Acupuncture is also used as a therapy to help stop smoking, weight loss and depression.

What else should I know?

Acupuncture is not a painful procedure but neither is it painless. Loose, comfortable clothing should be worn during treatment and you may be asked to remove some outer garments. Needles are sterilized before use and are left in place for up to 30 minutes or more. After treatment, as well as pain relief, patients will sense an overall feeling of wellbeing, increased energy levels, improved appetite and will sleep better.
