Why are you a vegetarian? Is it for health reason? Animal rights reasons? Both?

I know for me, that I tried vegetarianism in the past but it never stuck. As soon as I told myself I wasn't going to eat meat anymore I would inevitably start to crave something with meat in it. However, this last time I woke up one morning and basically said to myself, "You know what? I don't really want to eat this."

And this time it seems to be something I feel I can live with. I don't often feel deprived or like I am missing out. There are a few comfort foods that I miss (my mom's meatballs, orange chicken), but other than that I never really have a problem with it. In fact, I'm tempted to go vegan. While I technically consider myself an Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian I haven't really eaten eggs since I stopped eating meat, so I guess I'm really an Lacto-Vegetarian.

So, how did you guys all do it?

I became a vegetarian when I was 13 years old and started getting into animal rights. For the next twelve years or so I didn't even think about the health benefits of being being a vegetarian. I used to think that I would cheat more, but once I started the diet, I really can't even think about eating meat anymore, it makes me feel so sick to read about factory farming and the atrocities that happen to animals in these factories. Now that I am 29, I think about it's health benefits all the time how easy it is for me to make decisions because almost always the vegetarian option at a restaurant is also the 'healthy' option. Like you, Glory, I'm also slowly getting dairy and eggs out of my diet but I am finding that the most difficult part for me personally.

It's the dairy for me... I cut out eggs pretty easily. I just realized the other day that I have only had eggs once since I went vegetarian. If I could just find a way to cut out all dairy I'd be fine.

I know I could switch completely to soy milk (which would help a lot), but I have a hard time with cheese. It's not even that I really like it that much. I dunno... I probably only have one serving of cheese per day (today was unusual because I had two). It's something to think about.

I agree though, while sometimes I'll smell something cooking and think it smells good, most of the time smelling meat cooking does not make me want to eat it.

i started being vegetarian because of health reasons. meat tends to make me sick. i feel gross afterwards, it is just easier to cut it out all together. now, meat just tastes funny after so long of not eating it. once in a while i will- never fails to make me sick.
i also cut out dairy and most animal by-products. my body feels clean this way.

Hello! Been veggie for 6 years now... Thought this might be a fun group to join, because I approach carbs and protein differently than a lot of the dieting carnivores I know.
