I've really only been a vegetarian for a few weeks now, but I'm finding it hard to find vegetarian meals when I eat out. I usually end up getting either sides (can I have the side salad, side veggies, and baked potato?) or ordering a pasta dish and asking them to hold the meat. Does anyone have any tips for how to eat out vegetarian?

I always just look at the menu and try to be creative in ways to modify the dishes they already provide. If they have a veggie burger on the menu, I might order a salad that comes with meat and ask for a chopped up veggie burger or a portobello mushroom instead. Look at the entrees on the menu and their components and play mix-n-match in your head. I once ordered a BLT, but instead of the bacon, I asked for avocado, which was listed as being on another menu item. Most restaurants are very willing to accomodate. I have found that if they get your order wrong (ahem...Red Robin) they will try to make it up to you. So far, we have received over $100 in "manager apologies" meal credits and 2 really cool splotchy drink glasses because they screwed up our order so badly. And even though they keep messing up the meal, the service is really good and they do try. Plus they have gardenburgers and boca burgers and will substitute them for any of the meat patties on the menu (even on salads)! Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I think I will try that tonight with my salad! I know that Chili's has a veggie burger and Friday's offers a mushroom burger, so I can try to do that, depending on where we go. I really appreciate it!

wow! that is so different from here in the UK, where vegetarians are REALLY well catered-for at 99.9 per cent of restaurants, coffee shops, everywhere!
From my experience of the US, it very much depends where you are - local or ethnic restaurants seem to do better than chains, especially Italian and Middle Eastern, and the North East and South West are better than other areas. Is this correct, that is only from my observations.
It is improving though.

I live in Portland, OR, it's a veggie heaven!! In the 3 years I've lived here, I've only been to 1 restaurant that didn't have a single veggie entree on the menu...most restaurants have at least 3 or 4 entree choices in addition to sides and salads. There are dozens of exclusively veggie restaurants, and vegan restaurants popping up all over the city. Great advice to check out the ethnic restaurants in cities that don't have a lot of veggie options, when I lived in the midwest my options were 1)order a plain salad or a grilled cheese or 2)go to the Indian or Thai restaurant. (beware Mexican restaurants...many of them use animal broth in everything!)

I think that you guys (Rach-H-S and carlalily) hit the nail on the head. It really is a matter of where you go. I'm in the midwest so it is kind of difficult for me. I do like ethnic food but my BF is kind of a plain jane so we have to compromise on where we go. Still, I've gotten a lot better at just asking for them to compromise things at restaurants.

I wish that we had more vegetarian restaurants though. There is only one that I know of near me and it's not all that great.

Well, I have been a vegetarian all my life and I usually like places which are strictly vegetarian. Maybe its just me but I really like the aroma surrounding such places and also you are surrounded with people who have a similar taste. I have nothing against people who eat non-veg but I tend to not like it when I'm sitting next to someone eating non -veg when I hav never touched that food in my life. So, my choice of interest will be to go to a place where they only make vegetarian food. It might be hard to discover a place like such in the beginning but you will get there sooner or later.

Hello! Been veggie for 6 years now... Thought this might be a fun group to join, because I approach carbs and protein differently than a lot of the dieting carnivores I know.
