I dont know about you guys but I do really believe I am addicted to sugar. When I eat it I act like a druggie, gotta have my next fix! But unlike drugs, its very hard to stay away from sugar. Its in practically everything. That is why I think that clean eating is the best way for me. Our bodies dont need chemically enhanced foods, dyes, or preservatives. We need fresh produce and the naturally occuring vitamins thats in them!

If you are into books, checkout GODS DIET by Dr. Dorothy Gault. She has a similar views on foods as Reno and a great slogan - If you cant pick it, dig it, or kill it, Dont eat it! I love it!

Now, why if we know its best to eat this way and we know (at least I do) that sugar is so addictive to me, Do I continue to eat it????? Does anyone have any advice on how to keep away from the bad stuff?
Thoughts? Suggestions? Ponderings? What do you think ????? ~ Shelly

I completely agree that sugar is addictive. I try to eat and cook with sugar alternatives that have a lower glycemic index - they don't mess with your blood sugar levels so severely. Some of the best are: honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, malted barley. There is a dessert cookbook called Sweet and Natural that is all sugar free desserts. VERY good stuff. Even "sugar" cookies!

When you feel like you "must" have some real sugar, try to pair it with some protein. That keeps your blood sugar on a more even keel.

oh yes! I have only been able to lose weight after giving up added sugar entirely, which I have now done for 4 months.
Before that, I had worked myself up to bingeing on about 6,000 calories per day. I got the same effect from sugar, caffeine, alcohol and the odd cigarette I smoked socially, so they have all gone from my diet. One bit of any of those things, and I ate and ate all day.
I don't know if my addiction came from overeating on sugar, or if overeating on sugar led to my addiction - I am very sensitive to medication as well, and what I eat has a drastic effect on my mood, and my mother also can't eat sugar, so I suspect it is something I was physiologically prone to.
All I know is, the day I cut it out for good, after some false starts, my appetite went through the roof. I stuffed myself silly for 3 days, then my appetite dropped like a stone and is now what I would consider that of a 'normal' person. My mood is also fine, and I am all but over the severe depression and anxiety which plagued me.
I sometimes get sugar cravings at TOM, at first I ate a small bar of diabetic chocolate to take off the edge without setting off a chain reaction, but I try to avoid artificial sweeteners now too.
BUT I know other people who have also chosen to avoid added sugar, they have also found it much easier to stick to a health plan.

Thanks for the ideas! I'll have to check out the sugar free dessert cookbook. I've never had other addictions before, so I'm just now finding out what its all about to actually stop one, or at least attempt to! I'm so glad I found this group! Its great to find somebody who knows what your talking about and going through! Together we can stay atrong and lose these extra pounds for good!
