5 Ways to Make Your Well-Being a Priority

1. Know What You Want
It's hard (and even scary!) to embark on big life changes when you don’t have a clear picture of what you actually want. But don’t worry. Start by making a list of all the accomplishments in your life that make you proud. Follow it up with a list of everything you love. Now brainstorm a new list of things you’re curious about, new activities you want to try, stuff that excites you and makes you feel good. Keep writing and exploring these thoughts until you get a sense of your true passions and dreams. When you finally know what you want, go for it! The universe will find some way of helping you.

2. Prioritize and Communicate Your Needs
This might take some getting used to, but it’s an absolute necessity. No matter how hectic your life is, you need to make time to exercise, eat right, sleep, and have a little fun. That’s right, FUN is also a priority, so go out with your friends, have a date night with your partner, or play a game with your kids. STOP neglecting yourself. Decide what you need, figure out how to fulfill those needs, and let the other people in your life know what they can do to help.

3. Practice Positive Self-Talk
If you want to succeed at anything, you need to believe in yourself. When you’re faced with a new challenge or opportunity, always think positive. ALWAYS. If the first thought that pops into your head is, “I can’t,” replace it with a resounding, “I CAN!” Because, let’s face it, How can you NOT? You are capable of doing anything you set your mind to. No excuses or trash-talking; know you’re kicking ass and living your dreams.

4. Try Meditation
When your life goes into stress overdrive, sometimes you just have to walk away from it and CHILL. Meditation is a good way to do that. It’s like exercise for your brain. Research shows that meditation helps the brain become stronger. It also makes people happier because they’re able to bounce back faster from negative experiences. There are lots of different kinds of meditation, so you’ll have to do a little work to figure out which one is right for you. But trust me, deep breathing and visualization exercises can work magic on a frazzled state of mind.

5. Give Yourself Feel-Good Rewards Whenever you do something awesome, honor your accomplishment with a feel-good reward. Treat yourself to a mani/pedi, get a massage, go to a movie, take a bubble bath, or start a new book. If it’s a big accomplishment, plan a more substantial reward. For instance, when you reach that 100-pound mark, treat yourself to a vacation or some new clothes. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, just be sure to choose something that’s on par with your awesomeness.

Above all, give yourself permission to be selfish. YOU are important, and when it comes to your health, it’s OKAY to be a little selfish. Think about it this way: If you’re healthy and strong, you’ll have MORE to offer everyone else in your life.
