Health and WellnessExercises & Fitness Gym

The gym offers you a wide range of activities that covers all aspects of fitness under the same roof. From group classes (such as Step, aerobics, toning and stretching) to weight training and gym equipment, the gym is an ideal place for people of all ages and fitness levels to get into shape. Most gyms will offer the service of a fitness trainer who will make up a fitness plan tailored to your goals and needs. Guidance of a trainer will also ensure correct use of machine equipment and prevention of injury.

Many people may join a gym and end up not going. This may be because they are too afraid to ask for advice, a feeling of inadequacy amongst other more experienced exercisers, poor hygiene and etiquette in the gym and over crowdedness. It is up to you to bear this in mind when choosing a gym and to do your homework, ensuring your regular attendance and that your needs and lifestyle are catered for. You will soon see the worthwhile benefits!

Tips to enhance your gym experience

  • be considerate of other users. This includes wiping your sweat from machines for other users, leaving the machine as soon as you have finished, avoid talking loudly on your cell phone!
  • make the most of your time - even if you do not have the full hour, 15 minutes on the treadmill is just as beneficial. Do not get into the habit of skipping out on your visits!
  • find a gym buddy, to get support and motivation, and to make your trips to the gym more fun and enjoyable!
  • avoid focusing on one part of the body for strength-training. Unless you are healing from an injury, you will benefit more from an overall approach in your training
  • ask the instructor about your technique. Bad technique may result in injury and do more harm than good. If using machines, make sure that they are adjusted to your size
  • add variety to your routine. Monotony will lead to boredom, plateaus and in worst cases, injury
  • remember to cool down properly. Muscles need to be stretched and the heart rate lowered before you rush off into the changing rooms
