Health and WellnessExercises & Fitness Cycling
In some parts of the world - for example in Holland and Denmark, the bicycle is an integral part of life. As well as contributing to protecting the environment, bike cycling is beneficial to your health and is a quick and practical means of transport. It provides the heart with more exercise than walking and is not as stressful on the heart as is jogging. Bike travel can be incorporated into your daily routine and may be used to get to work, perform errands and enjoy the outdoors.
The downside of cycling is the safety factor. Probabilities are less than other sport injuries but accidents and injuries do happen. Please bear the following in mind when taking your bike:
- make sure you are familiar with the traffic code and obey traffic rules
- stay alert at all times and keep an eye on for anything; animals, absent-minded pedestrians and careless drivers, people talking on cell phones, etc.
- make sure that you are seen by others - at night wear reflectors and ensure your bike is equipped with lights and reflectors
- choose quiet routes that have less traffic!
- ensure your bike is always in good condition to avoid accidents
- wear a helmet!
