Starting Again

My parents were visiting this weekend and last weekend so it's been bad. I"m not sure how much I weight but I hope I didn't gain much. I'm going to try to detox for a day or so and then see. I think my secondary goal will be 115 by Memorial Day. Not sure if this is possible. I really need to get my butt to the gym

Lost 1 pound/ Lost a total of 19.7%

I've lost 1 pound...that puts me at 122lbs.

I am down 30 lbs and I've lost a total of 19.7% since beginning this weight loss process. YEY!

Let's see what else is new. We are about 95% sure that we will be moving to the mountains this summer (around Big Bear, CA) so I can start my Phd studies in Mathematics at  Univ. of California Riverside. We've never lived in the mountains (currently living a block from the ocean) but I'm looking forward to the experience. Imagine that, a mountain cabin just for us. 6000 feet up on a mountain will be quite cold in the winter. I'm sure our dog, Charlie, will LOVE it.

Pregnancy Weight Gain

So I had no idea, since so many people tend to gain 50 pounds during pregnancy, the average weight gain should be between 25-35lbs. That seems resonable. I've never been pregnant, but that seems MORE than plenty. I wish that more people would stay in this range, so everyong involved is healthy.

How much did people on this blog gain?

Bravo's Workout

I am just wondering whether anyone watching The Workout on Bravo? I love that show. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

lost 2 pounds/Grad School

Well, I'm back to 123. Yey! Also, got into University of California Riverside's Phd program in Math (and got a fellowship). I'm excited because now we don't have to move to Vegas (UNLV) but instead to a ski resort.

Violent Femmes/ Wedding rant

Today was made better by the rediscovery of the Violent Femmes.

"The Grandfarthers of Folk-Punk. Rock's dadaist improvisors. Calcified fossils of teen angst. American roots minimalists. The sonic personification of anxiety. Blues cubists. Spokesmen for misfits."

Anyway, I just wanted to spread the word on this somewhat forgotten, awesome band. Let me know if you're a fan as well!

On a different note, I'm considering dying my hair blue. Partly because I think it will look neat and partly in quiet protest of my boyfriend's brother's wedding.

I don't believe in marriage and especially in weddings/ ceremonies. Nevertheless, they asked me to be in their wedding as a bridesmaid promising that every person in the wedding party can wear whatever they want. Not so fast. It turns out that EVERYTHING is choreographed/pre-arranged and I think that's SHIT. Everything to the shoes! The dress is ugly and BEIGE.

My boyfriend's parents are really christian and don't believe in not getting married (and my bf and I have been together/living together for 3 years now). Anyway, there's a lot of tension regarding our decisions and, almost every time we go up to Seattle, his mother mentions something about us getting married.

Vanity Sizing

Why are women in America getting bigger while the sizes are getting smaller?

All the statistics below are from HeraldNet

"In 2004, students in the graduate school of journalism at New York's Columbia University did a study of vanity sizing. They found that size 10 Calvin Klein jeans equaled size 6 "modern fit" flares at the Gap. A size 6 Anne Klein skirt had the same size waistband as a size 4 from Nine West.

In 1994, the National Center for Health Statistics found the average American woman to be 5 feet 3.7 inches tall and 152 pounds. By 2000, she was 5 feet 3.8 inches tall and weighed 163, an 11-pound gain.

In the 1950s, a size-8 dress had a 34-inch chest, 24-inch waist and 34-inch hip measurement. By the 1980s, a dress with those dimensions was a size 2."

Singles

So my allergy is finally gone, which is great. It must have been to the salmon I ate on Saturday night. I felt bad all day and my face was red and puffy. Not a pretty sight.

My boyfriend and I ended the night watching  one of our favorite movies: Singles. I'm usually not a big romantic movie fan however this one really strikes a chord. Since moving to Southern California, four years ago, the art of sarcasm and wit is really lost on a lot of people. I am not sure whether it is an LA thing/California thing/or just a 2000's thing. Anyway, if any of you didn't see Singles, I really recommend it.

Fasting is NOT starving

So, just like the last time I did extrapounds.com, I got a few comments regarding my "drastic" weight loss goal. I know that the 100 pound goal is low, however, 104.5lbs is reasonable for someone who is 5'3''. According to the BMI chart, the normal range is 18.5-24.9.

At 104.5lbs, my BMI will be 18.5 which is TOTALLY NORMAL. My goal of 100lbs turns out to be a 17.7 BMI. This BMI is only .8 below  the normal range for my height. This is the same as if I were in the overweight range and my BMI was 25.7! From the blogs I've looked at extrapounds, there are plenty of people who are over 200lbs at 5'5''. This means that, at 200 lbs, your BMI is 33.3. This is OBESE.

So please, the next time, you think someone who is underweight or on the low end of their "normal range" is unhealthy, think about the 60% of people who are overweight in this country. (And from all of the statistics and TV health reports, we all know how much worse it is to be overweight/obese instead of thin/slightly underweight).

I would also like to address the issue of fasting. Fasting is NOT unhealthy but instead a great way to detoxify one's body. Fasting is not starvation. (Particularly, juice fasting which is what I am doing). Juice fasting (drinking only fresh vegetable and fruit juices) is one of the healthiest things you can do for your liver and heart and just about any part of your body (eating cake, no matter how you account for it on your Weight Watchers points, is NOT!). In fact, I am going to try to live more RAW in the future because it's organic and healthy for both the environment and for my body. If anyone is interested, here's a website:

Living and Raw Foods

Furthermore, if more people on this site were so concerned with being healthy, than so many of you wouldn't be overweight and/or obese. I am not trying to make anyone feel bad, it is just that the last time I made a blog and tried to lose weight on extrapounds, I encountered the same problem. I want this to be a positive experience for people who are both trying to lose A LOT of weight and for people who, perhaps, are trying to lose A LITTLE bit of vanity weight. Either way, we all want to fit into our clothes well and feel good about ourselves, whether or not others think that the weight we want to be is appropriate. (Personally, I do not believe that for someone who is 5'3'', a weight loss goal of 150lbs is healthy--it's classified as OVERWEIGHT by the BMI chart.) Please try to remember that it does not feel good to be called fat and remember that the next time you comment negatively on someone who you believe is too thin. Treat others as you want to be treated.

Interesting statistic FYI (from the March 2007 issue of Women's Health):
According to studies, in 1960 the average woman weighed 140lbs. In 2007, the average woman weighs 164 lbs.

Gained 2 pounds

So this is day 3 of the juice fast and I've actually gained 2 pounds. I think it all comes from the fact that I drink so much liquid. Oh well, hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I woke up rather refreshed and realized that I forgot to take a shower yesterday, so it's the first thing I did. I don't have too much energy but so far so good. I hope I get enough motivation to work out. This past weekend I went 6 times in 3 days--A LOT!  But didn't work out yesterday and feel like a big blah.
