Before After

Temptations everywhere

I had really hoped this summer I could hide while I was losing weight.  That didn't seem to be too much to ask for.  Surely with careful planning there would be nowhere to go and nothing big to do this summer.

Well, so much for that.  Two of my family members and one dear friend, all over age 80, have been in and out of the hospital over the past couple of weeks with life-threatening health problems.   Then it turned out my help was sorely needed at the Garlic festival next month working in "Gourmet Alley."  Add to that the expected diversions of our impending anniversary and the brief return of my childhood friend from Afghanistan, and I can see there are going to be a lot of reasons to chow down.

Eating the Medifast foods at work is not a problem.  It is actually more convenient because the food is ready to go, just add water, and cheaper too than going to Togo's and buying a sandwich.  It's the occasions where I'm out in the world when I am likely to get into trouble.  So far I have resisted taco salads smothered in sour cream, ice cream with your choice of toppings, pizza, burgers...  Every day brings a new challenge.

Breakfast juice

Crystal Lite makes two flavors that taste like juice: orange flavor and tangerine-strawberry.  They're very low cal and low carb, so they're perfectly okay on Medifast.  I love having a glass with my morning coffee.  It makes me feel positively "normal"!

Now, if they only made something that tasted like bread...  :)

It's the Weekend

Ugh, it's the weekend.  I have to admit I am not enjoying weekends like I did before Medifast.  There's so much free time to think about food.

Yesterday I bought a small New York steak and ate half with some A-1 and tomato.  That was pretty nice.  Today I have another tomato and the other steak half to look foward to.  During the week I don't bother with the "lean and green" meals, although I will have some cucumber with seasoned salt at some point.  It seems to be working so far, so I'm not going to fiddle with it.

Also I have ordered some fresh catch canned tuna from Papa George.  I have had it before many years ago from some family friends who did their own fishing and canning, so I have high hopes that this will be as wonderful.  I sure enjoyed their website at least.

I think I'll order some of those diet sprays too.  Anything to put some flavor into that bland Medifast food.

Does anyone read this?  I'd love to know.  :)

First week observations

Wow, one week already and the pounds keep coming off. I'm not even hungry now and have more energy than ever.

I put together some more sacks with Medifast lunches in them today. I culled out all of the horrible cappuccinos and puddings. I'm giving up on those particular items. I also set aside the bananna and orange shakes. To be fair, I haven't even tried those yet, but they sure look yucky to me. Maybe one weekend I'll break out those boxes and sample them, but I don't want to be stuck at work and feeling like I have to gag anything down.

My schedule has settled down to something like this:

  • 8:00 a.m. -- Oatmeal, all flavors are fine.
  • 10:00 a.m. -- "Fun" snack (WAS pudding or cappuccino, but that wasn't very fun! So for now this is going to be a shake, until I order something else from the MF people).
  • 12:00 p.m. -- Soup, chicken noodle is good, minestrone is mostly okay, but the tomato was a big disappointment. (The chicken and minestrone soups only taste okay when made with some chicken bullion added and in my hotpot, not the micro.)
  • 2:00 p.m. -- "Green" meal, usually cucumber with seasoned salt, my favorite. (I don't do the "lean" part in order to stay on the fast track, with dr.'s blessings.)
  • 4:00 p.m. -- Bar as a late-afternoon pick-me-up. The carmel and s'mores ones are okay. I haven't tried any of the others yet.
  • 6:00 p.m. -- Shake when I get home. They aren't overly exciting when you just make them with water. At home I put them in the shake maker (blender) with ice and sometimes use a half a can of diet soda instead of water. A little Crystal Lite can liven things up considerably also. My favorite combo, however, is courtesy of the MF boards: vanilla shake mix with ice and water, cinnamon, and Molly McButter (or Butter Buds, or even I Can't Believe It's Not Butter). It tastes like a Cinnabon.

Well, there's the sum of my knowledge after one week on the program. I'm sure things will change as time passes.

Wow

I guess that sauce on the salmon wasn't too bad. I'm down 0.8 today. :)

Salmon Dinner Day

Lost 1.8 pounds over the weekend in spite of having too much steak on Sunday. I hope my luck holds. Today I had a nice lunch of salmon and asparagus, which are both on plan, but I probably ate a little too much. I'm sure the sauce the fish was sitting in wasn't on plan though, but I only had a little of that. I suspect it was more fat than carbs anyway. Altogether not a bad Medifast day. The rest of this week should be easier, since there are no more social engagements.

Sleepless on Medifast

It has been difficult for me to sleep since I started the Medifast program.  I don't see that mentioned anywhere.  Maybe that's one of those symptoms that go away after the first few weeks?

Father's Day

Today was Father's Day.  Thank God Dad likes steak.  I was able to have some steak and a salad and feel almost normal for once.  I even had a sugar-free popsicle for dessert.  It was a very tasty meal, the first in four days, to be honest.

I did learn however how to make the chicken noodle soup taste okay.  I added a teaspoon of chicken bullion and a little soy sauce.  It wasn't half bad.  It tastes a lot better having been made on the stove too.  Tomorrow at work the challenge will be using the microwave again and making the soup taste all right.

This morning I bought a "shake maker" (blender with a spigot) for my strawberry shake.  It tasted the same as usual, only with crushed ice added.  Big deal!  I will need to work on that one.  It's not worth dragging the blender to work with me just for that.

Hmm, Ice Cream?

The chocolate Medifast shakes freeze up into okay ice cream (more like ice milk), but not the French vanilla ones.  Yuck!

Greetings

Hello and welcome to my blog.  I'm Missy, as in the title, and today is day three of Medifast for me.

Everyone says day three is the worst day, but I'm doing okay so far.  Maybe it's because I've been keeping busy, or maybe it's because I started cutting back on calories during the week before I got started (replacing meals with Slim-Fast).   Either way, I'm doing okay at this point.

Two things I have figured out so far:

The "cappuccino," bleh!  Better to have a real nonfat latte instead.  MF says you can substitute a glass of nonfat milk for a meal anyway.  Why waste that opportunity on a fake cappuccino when you can have a real one?

The minestrone soup tastes a lot better if you add more than the 1/2 c. water they call for.  I made it with 3/4 c. water and 3/4 c. fat free chicken broth today out of desparation, and it was almost okay.
