Ok, so I went to Atheletico where I was so nicely dressed in running shorts...and a button down shirt and casual shoes...nice look. So Aaron tells me I have "Patellofemural pain syndrome." For now I should:
1. Ice and do whatever makes me comfortable
2. Not increase my distance for the time being
3. Talk with my doctor and get a referral
4. Participate in this research study they're doing on this very syndrome, meaning me nor my insurance have to pay a dime.
5. Participate in said program for 6 weeks, with appointments 2 to 3 times per week. Will focus on strengthening my hip flexors, which will help the muscles on the sides of my knees.
(I should note that he DID NOT SUGGEST DEEP KNEE BENDS, thank you very much.)
That is all.
So if I feel up to it, I may run a few miles by the end of the week, and continue at that mileage for awhile. With my long runs, I'll play it by ear. I asked him if this means I should count out the marathon, and he said "No, not necessarily. Not at all, but we should see how it goes."

not bad
at least you don't have to cut out running all together, and you don't have to pay anything! wishing you some speedy healing.

too cold too cold :-) Ok enough Vanilla Ice
Ice and YOGA!!!!! Hip Flexor exercises not doubt covered in YOGA!
Glad to know you at the least educated about your condition.
Well, that doesn't sound too negative - just take it how it comes, and fingers crossed for the marathon!

Sounds like my pain...
I have been having an awful lot of knee pain too! Missed my half because of it. I finally broke down and made an appt to get it checked out. Good luck with your marathon training. I hope that you can still do it. I was planning on doing one in November. I'm hoping that I can still. I guess i will find out next week.
Nice loss this week! I'm going in for my WI on Saturday... and 2lbs of the extra have already fallen away...I'm just going to keep eating OP and working out and I pray I have a nice loss like you!
That finish line in Soldier Field is awesome! My dad would think that is cool as he has been a life long Bears fan.
I won't mention that my folks are at the Cubs/Devil Rays game in Tampa tonight. This is their first ever Cubs game live. They made great big WGN signs--they are several rows behind the Cubs bull pen.
One day I hope to take dad to Wrigley--it is so surreal. I am not even a baseball fan and was in awe of the Wrigley experience.
I'm sure I have asked you this before but I have forgotten--when is the Soldier Field run? Are walkers allowed? I'm thinking it is early enough that I could tolerate the heat.
Definitely listen the the professionals--you can't have any permanent injuries b/c we have to meet someday during a race! Totally selfish, huh!
Yes - nice to meet in person, sorry it was so rushed, we have never picked him up there and his Mom was at the ER so it was a little harried. Plus we had to get him dropped off and then get home to get ready to go out to dinner. We were out for a long bike ride when we go the call so we had to rush home to shower and then get in the car to get down to pick him up and of course forgot the booster seat in the process. Sorry to hear about your injury are there other kinds of exercise you can do istead of running??
I have patellofemoral pain syndrome, too! That and patellar tracking disorder. I was diagnosed a little over a year ago....I wish I could be in a research study!! But yea, thats basically what I have been doing to manage the pain. Ice is my friend. And lots of strengthening and stretching. I have to wear a brace when I run, play tennis, and sometimes to bed. I have it in both knees.
You'll be ok. It really is managable, and without medication. Feel better soon!
Oh, and yea, I'm back on the crack. I mean diet Coke. LOL I've cut back quite a bit, so its nothing like it used to be. I think thats what I was shooting for anyway.
