Much Better!
I went for a run this morning, and it felt so much better than last week's run. I'm encouraged that I can do it, without misery!
My sister joined me on this run, and that was fun. It makes the time go by that much faster (or seem to) having someone to visit with along the way. I still use my Nike , I just keep the volume down. She uses her iPod Shuffle, also with the music low. That way we both have a beat to run to, and company. :) Does anyone else do that?
After almost a week off from running, due to a family emergency, it feels great to be back in the game.

Rotten Run
I learned 2 things from my run this morning:
1. Never run 5 hours after breakfast. My blood sugar was low, and I had zero energy. I ran much slower than usual... and I am usually slow to begin with!
2. Never run after taking my diuretic. I had to tinkle the whole time! I thought that after 5 hours, I'd be fine, but it was BAD. I was off on a trail between housing developments, with no chance for a potty break. Arg!
I guess I'll have to go back to running first thing in the morning. The weather will be better soon, so that should work out fine.
Other than running first thing, does anyone have any other ideas? I'd like to enjoy my run... it's hard to keep moving when I have to cross my legs! hahahahaha

A fresh start
It's the first day of spring - finally! And just in time. After a death in the family, we made an impromptu trip to Alabama this week. Four days of driving, one day with the family. It was worthwhile to go, but threw me WAY off the eating/exercise program I was on.
So I'm off to a fresh start. No worrying about catching up, whining about missing my long run, whatever. I'm just looking forward to enjoying the weather, with my iPod, Nike and doggies. :)

Moderation
I'm doing my best to behave. I walked 4 miles with my sister this morning, then ran 2.3 with the dogs this afternoon. I know I can't keep doing both, or I'll overwork my joints/shins, etc.
I'm 'training' for a 5k next month, so I actually turned down walking in the morning. Hope I didn't hurt my sister's feelings, but I am not in the mood to be injured. So why do I feel so guilty? As if I was being totally selfish? She usually runs with me, so it's not an issue, but she's been sick, and not up to running. And the dogs have had cabin fever, and deserve the exercise and adventures.
Ok, enough of my rambling. I figured if I put it in writing, I'd be resolved to not call her back and agree to walk after all. :)
Happy Trails!

Moving on...
Well, it was finally nice out. So we walked the dogs through a neighborhood park yesterday. It was incredible! We saw an deer, and followed it for 1/2 a mile. We swore it was just trying to play tag with Moose. ;)
It's funny, but the more I'm able to get outside and move, the more I want/need to. It is so great to be out of the house and active! I highly recommend it for anyone who's been housebound this winter!
Now, if my hand will just heal. It's still super sore from chipping ice a month ago. Possibly a stress fracture. Arg.. it's always something.

Spring Fever
We had a few days of 40 degree weather. Then back to the 20s and 30s. What a tease! This weekend should be in the 50s, then hit the 60s next week. I can't wait!
I'm still planning to do the 5k in April, but my main goal next week will be to stay healthy and injury-free. I have an urge to run daily when it's nice out... and am afraid of overdoing it. I know better than to double my mileage in a week, but I'm SO sick of being indoors, it'll be tempting. And my new Nike is so much fun, I want to rack up the miles.
So, my plan of action is to make a workout plan this week, and stick to it next week. I'm going to re-do a week from the C25K plan, so I don't end up hobbling, and missing the race.
Bring it on, Spring!

On the road again...
We finally had a thaw, and I was able to get out running again. Treadmills cause me hip pain, so I'd been doing the WATP dvd, using the treadclimber, and mall walking. It was making me feel a bit shut in though. I needed fresh air!
It was great to get out! The dogs thought so too, so unfortunately, getting a solo run in is quite tricky. I took them first, then planned to go back out, but Bailey was a muddy mess, and needed a bath. After all that, I did get back out, and finished.
Yesterday, I tried to run first, so whatever happened with the dogs wouldn't interfere. You know the part in Monty Python movies, where the crowd shuffles and yells "rabble, rabble"? Well, these two must have been paying attention, and did their version of it at the door. So they got to go too. Sheesh.
A great time was had by all though, and I'm psyched to get back out there this morning, now that the rain has stopped.
Oh, and I FINALLY had a decent WI... after gaining 10 pounds in 3 weeks, I lost 2 this week. I'm on my way back down to feeling comfortable in my own skin! :)

My New Toy
My dearest Hubby just bought me the Nike , a handy gadget that goes on my shoe (with the help of the shoe pouch, as I wear Saucony running shoes), measuring my distance, speed, time and calories burned. It connects to my computer via my iPod Nano, giving me colorful graphs depicting my runs.
The voice that cheers me on in my iPod is male (my choice), and I've named him Nick, or Nicky, 'short' for Nike. Yes, I'm strange, I acknowledge that... but it's nice to have a friendly voice tell me... "only 1 more minute til your goal time. "
This is going to be SUCH a motivator for me to get out there and run. I'm a very visual person, and to see my runs, complete w/speed, right there on my computer, makes me want to get right back out there and run more.
Now, if only the weather around here will cooperate. :)

Finding the track...
I can't say that I'm 'back on track' yet, but I'm at least finding it. :) I made it to the gym yesterday, for a quick mile on the bike, then 3/4 of a mile swim. It felt sooooo good to move again. I'd been using the WATP dvds during the ice storm, but silly me - I loaned them to my sister who doesn't have 4WD. So, while the streets are still an icy/slushy mess, I thought I'd hit the pool. Good decision!
Today was another story - life got in the way, and I only got in a 30 minute walk w/my iPod.
My Nike came in the mail, so I am anxious to get it going, and get running! I can't wait to see how it works, and how far/fast I'm really going. Maybe I don't wanna know? lol
Happy Trails!

Iced In!
Three days after another storm, we're still iced in. I've spent my time wisely, I think. I've been doing Leslie Sansone's WATP 5 mile walk each day, as well as using the treadclimber and doing tons of shoveling/ice picking.
However, I still gained a pound. Arg. So in the past 3 weeks, I've gained 9 pounds. Granted, the first 8 were in 3 days, after being off the BP meds. But that never came off when I refilled my prescription.
Half of me wants to hibernate. Just say 'forget it', and focus on other aspects of my life. Law school is needing my full time attention, anyway. The other half (the half that has seen my weight go up and down for the past 25 years) says 'No way - you'll end up at a new high weight in no time!'.
So I'm going to listen to my 'better' half, and focus on making healthier food choices more often. I've got the exercise portion of the program down... I just need to cool it with eating out. When I cook, I control the nutritional aspect much better.
