Ten best tips for easy slimming down

Losing Weight

Ten best tips for easy slimming down.

One of the best things you can do for your overall health is drop a few pounds. Or maybe more than a few pounds. Being overweight significantly increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer... the list seems almost endless. Plus, if you do get sick or need surgery, being overweight can make any treatments riskier.

You know the drill when it comes to losing weight--take in fewer calories, burn more calories. But you also know that most diets and quick weight-loss plans have about as much substance as a politician's campaign pledges. You're better off finding several simple things you can do on a daily basis--along with following the cardinal rules of eating more vegetables and less fat and getting more physical activity. Together, they should send the scale numbers in the right direction: down.

1. Once a week, indulge in a highcalorie-tasting, but low-calorie, treat. This should help keep you from feeling deprived and binging on higher calorie foods. For instance:

  • Lobster. Just 83 calories in 3 ounces.
  • Shrimp. Just 60 calories in 12 large.
  • Smoked salmon. Just 66 calories in two ounces. Sprinkle with capers for an even more elegant treat.
  • Whipped cream. Just 8 calories in one tablespoon. Drop a dollop over a bowl of fresh fruit for dessert.

2. Treat high-calorie foods as jewels in the crown. Make a spoonful of ice cream the jewel and a bowl of fruit the crown. Cut down on the chips by pairing each bite with lots of chunky, filling fresh salsa, suggests Jeff Novick, director of nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa in Florida. Balance a little cheese with a lot of salad.

3. After breakfast, make water your primary drink. At breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout the rest of the day, focus on water instead of juice or soda. The average American consumes an extra 245 calories a day from soft drinks. That's nearly 90,000 calories a year--or 25 pounds! And research shows that despite the calories, sugary drinks don't trigger a sense of fullness the way that food does.

4. Carry a palm-size notebook everywhere you go for one week. Write down every single morsel that enters your lips--even water. Studies have found that people who maintain food diaries wind up eating about 15 percent less food than those who don't.

5. Buy a pedometer, clip it to your belt, and aim for an extra 1,000 steps a day. On average, sedentary people take only 2,000 to 3,000 steps a day. Adding 2,000 steps will help you maintain your current weight and stop gaining weight; adding more than that will help you lose weight.

6. Add 10 percent to the amount of daily calories you think you're eating, then adjust your eating habits accordingly. If you think you're consuming 1,700 calories a day and don't understand why you're not losing weight, add another 170 calories to your guesstimate. Chances are, the new number is more accurate.

7. Eat five or six small meals or snacks a day instead of three large meals. A 1999 South African study found that when men ate parts of their morning meal at intervals over five hours, they consumed almost 30 percent fewer calories at lunch than when they ate a single breakfast. Other studies show that even if you eat the same number of calories distributed this way, your body releases less insulin, which keeps blood sugar steady and helps control hunger.

8. Walk for 45 minutes a day. The reason we're suggesting 45 minutes instead of the typical 30 is that a Duke University study found that while 30 minutes of daily walking is enough to prevent weight gain in most relatively sedentary people, exercise beyond 30 minutes results in weight and fat loss. Burning an additional 300 calories a day with three miles of brisk walking (45 minutes should do it) could help you lose 30 pounds in a year without even changing how much you're eating.

9. Find an online weight-loss buddy. A University of Vermont study found that online weight-loss buddies help you keep the weight off. The researchers followed volunteers for 18 months. Those assigned to an Internet-based weight maintenance program sustained their weight loss better than those who met face-to-face in a support group.

10. Bring the color blue into your life more often. There's a good reason you won't see many fast-food restaurants decorated in blue: Believe it or not, the color blue functions as an appetite suppressant. So serve up dinner on blue plates, dress in blue while you eat, and cover your table with a blue tablecloth. Conversely, avoid red, yellow, and orange in your dining areas. Studies find they encourage eating.

i'm getting married in less than 250 days

so i need to get busy with the exercising and weight loss.  :)

i walked a mile this morning before work and did my twisting machine at 40 pounds with 3 sets of 10 reps.  i also did bicep pushdowns with 3 sets of 10 reps at 30 or 40 pounds... the number escapes me.  but then that was over 2 hours ago and i've worked in the office quite a bit since then.  too many numbers.  ;)

anyway...

what have you done today?

three questions answered

What is Hydroxycut?  Hydroxycut is a product that I purchased at my local big box store.  It helps me to stay on track and lose weight, when I remember to take as directed.  Do a GOOGLE search for more information.  :)

Is your dvd player not working? Well, yes and no.  In the living room, we have a dvd player that has the ability to have 5 discs loaded at a time and you choose the one you want to play.  Well, it seems that one of the "choices" wasn't working.  We also have a single disc dvd player in the living room.  I have since moved my exercise dvds out of the 5 disc dvd player and will only use the single disc dvd player in future.

whose abs dvd do you do?  I use the 8 minute series of workout dvds.  I have the 8 minute abs, 8 minute arms, 8 minute legs, and 8 minute buns.  I found the series on ebay after searching area stores and not having any luck.

wednesday rambling

On Sunday, I did both the 8 minute ABS and the 8 minute ARMS.  And repeated the exercises on Monday and Tuesday.  Today, I completed the ABS workout only because my dvd player would not cooperate with me.  I hope to have the issue resolved before the morning.

I have been using Hydroxycut this week in addition to doing the workouts.  I intend to continue with the exercises at least through the school year.  Since I do the workouts before I take my daughter to school, it is easy to do during the week.  For some odd reason, I was up crazy early this past Sunday.  I hope to incorporate riding my bike into the routine next week.  This week, I have been concentrating on sewing once I return home from the morning drop-off.

I will step on the scale next week.

16 minutes

I did the 8 minute ABS and 8 minute ARMS video this morning.

he saw my number

The above is my breakfast this morning - Quaker Oats Weight Control Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal.

And, yes.  You read the title correctly.  Last night, he was looking at the scale when I stepped on it and continued looking until the numbers stopped flashing and my weight displayed.  OMG!!!  That was scary.  We've been together for just over 8 months.  We've lived together for about 5 months.  He wouldn't let me look at the scale when he stepped on but he told me the number.  We're within 10 pounds of each other.  Thankfully my number is lower than his but still.

I joined AllRecipes.com earlier this morning.  I do all the cooking and he has packed on a few pounds eating well.  ;)  Prior to us, I didn't enjoy cooking.  Now that I have someone who is appreciative of my efforts, I enjoy the whole process.  Well, not the whole thing.  I could do without the dirty dishes afterward since we don't have a dishwasher.

Anyway...

The gist of this entry is... I need to lose weight.  Permanently.  The only weight gain I want in my future is when a pregnancy exists.

bridesmaid dress

weight loss weblog

I ordered my bridesmaid dress last week and will pick it up on September 15th or there abouts.  The wedding is on November 13th.  The dress fits kinda tight across the ribcage but I can breathe and sit down.  My hips are more prominent than I'd like but overall the dress looks pretty good though I'd still like to reach the above stated goal within the remaining time.  The thing is the dress won't be falling off of me completely if I do reach my goal.  At least I don't think so.  Reaching my goal will make the dress looser and skim over my curves rather than cling to them.  The bride is my boyfriend's sister.

Oh, a picture of the dress?  Here it is.

it's been a while

I'm back.

2008 was a crazy year.  I turned 35 years old in April and in June, I was terminated from my job.  Then in October, my boyfriend of nearly eight years broke up with me via a telephone call.  It turned around though.  Halloween-ish I joined e-Harmony and towards the end of November, I was matched with my soulmate.  We met in person on a "day that will live in infamy".

2009 has been a great year.  I'm 36 and living with my love.  Life is good.  Though I do still have more weight on my frame than I'd like.  The crazy thing is that I'm wearing size 6 Levi's but the number on the scale hasn't budged *that* much.  What's even crazier is that I went shopping for a pretty party dress in the Spring and size 6, 8, 10, and 12 all fit me.  THE SAME.  *shakes head*

I'm on twitter more than anything.  Well, maybe facebook...  But the point is that I'm determined to lose the "extrapounds" because I'd really like to wear my dream dress (i don't know exactly what it looks like at the moment but i don't want to have to worry about size when the time comes) when my guy pops the question.

The best thing is I'm happy.  Today.  Right now.

Oh yeah, I will do the measurement thing this week as well as stepping on the scale.  I am going to post my cycle day with the details as I think the numbers might influence (be influenced by) each other.

good pain

two days after my first 8 minute ABS and ARMS workout, i can still feel muscles that i hadn't felt in a long time.  it is a good kind of pain.  almost like my muscles are waking up.

oh... and yesterday was the first time since october (when i started this new job) that i haven't been hungry all day and done something about it.  i wasn't starving for breakfast.  drank a coffee cup filled with water instead of scrounging around for something to eat.  felt no need for a mid-morning snack.  and then for lunch, i didn't eat my chips OR cookies.  =)

my daughter makes our lunches on sunday evening for the week.  she makes our lunches virtually identical and they are even because she is so keen on being absolutely fair.  my little virgo.

then ate a sensible supper last night.

it is almost like i can feel metabolism picking up again.  =)  i like the feeling.  plus i'm strangely not as cold as i was before.  as if the blood in my veins is literally warming to the idea of working these tired muscles.

oh & i had forgotten how much my neck muscles would hurt after doing the 8 minute ABS.  wow.
