Gotta get off my butt...

...and exercise more. I spent all day today in the yard with my son...we worked on the weeds, dethatching, re-sodding wherever necessary and a few plant beds. Wow! I never really appreciated summer in all my years growing up in India, but Chicago gives me a whole new appreciation for the word "chilly" (pun on chili - too funny that I am explaining the joke now).

But tomorrow I will get up and plug the trusted, old treadmill and start logging on the miles. I also intend to do the traditional breathing yoga exercises called Pranayam. And, maybe, just maybe, if Jane is a good girl - I will stick the Jane Fonda type for perfect abs in 1 month into the VCR!

Today, I was feeling really really frumpy since I was in the yard all day with my son on a 80 deg day. So, I go to Menards to pick up some sod and this cute guy strikes up a question, asking me about plants and such like and what plants grow well in India etc (see, I had my rings off since I was gardening). I worked my son and husband into the conversation and he left...but it was flattering! And a good motivator to stay on the diet. LOL, just kidding.

Here's my recipe for the day:

Spicy tilapia in a garlic, lemon, pepper sauce.

Martinate 2 fresh tilapia fillets with 2 cloves of finely grated garlic, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder and 1 tsp lemon-pepper spice. Saute in olive oil over low flame. Turn when fish looks a little done, fish must have a brown crust. When done, heap 1/2 tomato, finely chopped over fish and cover, allowing the pan's heat to soften the tomatoes.

As simple as this sounds, it was yummy. And my son loved it too, sans the chili powder.

And, thanks to everyone for your encouraging words!

Day 4

Today is Day 4 and 4 lbs have been shed. Its been tough, I won't lie! Day 2, I drove with my toddler in a thunderstorm to the grocery store for ricotta cheese to make the allowed dessert. Unbelievable cravings for sugar...which got better Day 3 and I hope even better Day 4!

I have been reading other blogs and am debating whether I want to stay on Phase 1 a while longer than 2 weeks, not more than 4 weeks. I will make that decision later, I guess when I am nearing the end of these 2 weeks.

Typical day is:

Breakfast:

2 microwaved eggs with a slice of cheese and cup of regular coffee

Mid-morning snack :

5 nuts, 1/2 string cheese

Lunch:

Chicken sauteed with Indian spices and a vegetable salad

Dinner:

Fish with salad and veggies

Lots of water all day!

Starting South Beach

Wow, I can't believe how this weight has come and stayed. I have been overweight since my late teens. Food and sweets especially to me are an addiction. Yes, like a drug!

My wake-up call was my first pregnancy - I had gestational diabetes. Even though it went away, and was diet-controlled only (no painful insulin shots), I know I have a 50% chance of getting Type II Diabetes eventually, especially if I keep the weight on!

I did not want to diet - the dreaded 'd' word...but wanted a lifestlye change, something which was not terribly difficult to do and did not restrict half the food groups of the world. Coz everyone knows thats not healthy.

My goal with South Beach is to be healthy and active, weightloss is a welcome by-product of that. I want to start being more aware of what goes in my mouth, take control.

Being Indian, and having a husband who loves those spices, I intend to adapt the SB Diet to my cultural foods. Cheers to inventing new recipes and staying on SB!
