First Goal Met

I did it.  My August Walking Challenge has been met.  I've walked 50 miles so far this month, with about a week to spare.

I'm moving to a new office at my job, one that is only three miles from my house.  This weekend, I'm getting a bicycle.

Next month, my goal is to get 80 miles of combined walking/bike riding.  Let's see how I do!

Nepoznata

One of my favorite poets, Marko Pogačar, wrote a poem called Kolumbova Osveta, which translates into "Columbus' Revenge."  There are two lines that have always struck a chord with me.  The first is "Izleti u nepoznato su uvijek ono što nas može učiniti sretnim" (A journey into the unknown is always what can make us happy).  The second, along the same lines, is "Nepoznata stvar zahtijeva da je zagrliš" (The unknown demands that you embrace it).  I think about these lines a lot in my daily life, and I've adapted them to fit myriad purposes.

It's been just over three weeks since the scare that renewed my interest in my own health and fitness, and I am trying not to let the passing of time dull my zeal for making changes to how I've been living.  I'm pleased to announce that I am half-way to my goal of walking 50 miles in August.  At last count, I've trekked nearly 27 miles across Kansas City since the beginning of the month, and I have a good 20 days to go to get the remaining 23 under my feet.

It's not been easy; we've been in the middle of our annual week-long heatwave, only this year, it's now entered its second week.  Near 100 (110+ including the heat index) during midday, and only low 80s at night.  I've been waiting until at least 8:00pm to get my walking in, and even then, I've not been hitting the pavement with the vigor of the previous week.  All the walking has worn a hole in my already threadbare sneakers, and I've been sluggish to go buy a new pair.  My feet may just hold me hostage and refuse to walk another step until I give in to their demands for new shoes.

I've not been too mindful of the readings on the scale, to be honest.  For me, number of pounds isn't nearly as motivating an indicator as a suddenly loose pair of jeans or an old shirt that now can be buttoned down.  These are my milestones, and I've already noticed a change in the way my clothes fit.  Also, I feel myself getting stronger each day.  When I first began walking, I'd start having a nagging backache about 30 minutes in.  Now, I can walk 3+ miles without any backaches whatsoever.  I think my back muscles are finally getting used to lugging around my ample gut, just in time for my ample gut to make a modest exit.

My scale respects me, choices, and a challenge update

Dear Internet,
It's been a few days since last I posted with a meaningful article to this blog.  I am pleased to inform that I have not fallen off the wagon, and I've stuck with my "Lose Weight or Die" mentality for the duration of an entire Hanukkah, eight days.  It's been challenging, and there've been a few times I've let it slip--having a Scrabble-tile-sized piece of brownie at work, or a beer one night after a particularly long day--but all in all, I'm feeling the positive effects of making better choices even after just a Hanukkah.
My scale respects me
In an earlier entry, I wrote that I was too fat for my scale.  And it was true.  Emphasis on "was."  When I stepped onto my bathroom scale, it would read "overload."  Now, it doesn't.  I weighed myself this morning and, for the first time, got a number: 407.  Suffice it to say, I was thrilled.  This leads me to believe that I underestimated my initial "start weight" of 410, since fat people lose a lot of weight at the beginning of diet/exercise change.  I think I'll keep it the way it was, however, since it was never anything more than a guess.  So, on the record, I have lost 3 pounds.  THREE POUNDS, and I'm absolutely over the moon about it.
Making choices
Sometimes I wonder if I'm overdoing it on my new healthy foods.  I wonder why I've gone back to the store multiple times for items like carrots, peaches, blueberries, salad greens, etc.  I've come to the conclusion that, yes, I like to eat.  I like to eat a lot.  Fortunately, the foods I am eating a lot of are carrots, peaches, blueberries, salad greens, etc.  I reckon some of it is psychological, but some of it is my body going, "Hey!  Where are all the calories you used to feed me?  We need more calories!"  I feel slightly better knowing that I can eat virtually as many vegetables as I want without worrying about gaining weight, but changing the volume of the food I consume, in addition to the quality, is a part of living a healthy life, too.
August challenge update
During the month of August 2010, I've challenged myself to walk a total of 50 miles.  I've verified the distances using a cool free website, http://www.mapmywalk.com.

Belly buttons

I got up early this morning to check in on a part-time job I applied for.  I don't know if it's going to work out, but being up at 6:30am, and not having to go into work until 10.15am, I got some free time to get my daily walk in.  Today is the fifth day in a row I've gone out and walked, and I'm feeling better than I have in a while.
Belly Buttons
I know I'm losing some poundage, but since I'm currently at a scale-busting weight, I'm not sure how much.  I am thankful that I've noticed some small changes in my shape: namely, my favorite blue shirt.  I love this short-sleeved button-down shirt, but everytime I wear it the lower buttons come undone when I sit down.  Well, yesterday, I took a chance and wore the shirt to work.  I was pumped when I got into my car to go home because I'd gone the whole day without any undone buttons.  Goodbye, gut!  But, not unlike a crack addict, I continue to check my buttons to make sure everything is as it should be.  I'm sure everyone thinks I probably have a rash on my belly or something.

Heat advisory

Dear Internet,
What a good few days this has been.  It's 8:00pm here in America's Heartland right now, and still an organ-bursting 90 degrees.  I'm waiting until about 9:00pm to take my daily walk, the fourth daily walk in my "50-mile month" challenge.  I went into the laundromat in my neighborhood--actually, one of about six laundromats in my neighborhood--to apply for a Sundays-only part-time job.  The girl who took my application gave me some tips, and let it slip that an 8-hour day of work would net about $50.  I'll take it!
Yesterday, I walked a nice, comfortable 2.91-mile loop around my neighborhood, the first time I've done my daily walk without stopping off somewhere (I do errands and things while I walk).  Tonight, I don't think I'll push it as far, considering the heat.  I'd hate to collapse from exhaustion and chip my teeth!
Embarrassing truths
This is the part of the blog where I confess that I'm too fat for my scale.  It's true.  I believe my scale has a 400-lb limit, and since I'm just a touch over that, everytime I step on it, it says "overload."  I laugh it off, because it not the scale's fault.  I already decided that the first time I get an actual reading from my scale, I'm throwing myself a party, complete with a double-fudge chocolate cheesecake.  Just kidding.  I'm dieting, I'm not one of The Golden Girls.
August Challenge Update
In August, I've challenged myself to walk a total of 50-miles, as verified by a nifty website I found just for that purpose (http://www.mapmywalk.com).  I just got back from my 88-degree walk in the muggy night of Kansas City.  Here is how I've done so far.
Miles walked yesterday: 2.91
Miles walked today: 2.40
Total miles walked: 10.56 (21.1%)

New daily average required to reach goal: 1.46 (down from 1.49)

The Subway evolution and an August challenge

Part One: The Subway evolution
What a great day it was here in Kansas City.  Not too hot and (finally) a break in the humidity.  It gave me some time to run some errands and enjoy my weekends in general.  Since Sunday is my only day off work, I slept in until about 9:00, then took my Jeep into the shop to get an oil change and some other minor repairs.  While waiting, I decided to get up and take a walk instead of waiting at the shop.  It wasn't a long walk, but it was a good way to squeeze in an extra 0.61 miles (as verified by www.mapmywalk.com) before my longer walk in the afternoon.
While waiting in line at Subway to get my generous helping of salad ingredients crammed into a six-inch sliced bread loaf, I started thinking about what I order when I eat there, and how it's changed since I've been trying to get healthy.  It's gone something like this:
The old me ordered: Foot-long BMT (pepperoni, salami, ham) on white, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, jalapenos, extra mayo, salt, pepper.  Under closer inspection, this Subway option netted a grand total of 1220 calories, 72 grams of fat, and 3870 milligrams of sodium, at the very least.
I first nixed the BMT in favor of the Spicy Italian, which is just pepperoni and salami, without ham.  Then I added the onions and cucumbers to make myself feel less guilty about what I was taking in, hoping to balance it out with some added roughage.  The two big changes occured when I started getting the six-inch sandwich instead of the foot-long, and shortly after, ordering the Veggie De-Lite instead of the Spicy Italian.  Around that time, the cheese went by the wayside, when I realized that I really couldn't taste it in the sandwich.  I clung onto the mayonnaise (albeit without the modifier "extra") as a safety blanket, rationalizing, "Look at how much I've already cut out, surely I can afford a little mayonnaise on occasion, right?"  Then, I noticed how just much mayo they put on those sandwiches compared to the serving suggestion of (brace yourself) one tablespoon.  I was surely getting at least four or five tablespoons of mayo on each sandwich, and at 110 calories and 12 grams of fat per tablespoon, logic won out and I said goodbye to the mayo.  In its place, I've been asking for the fat-free Sweet Onion sauce, along with the modifier "just a little, please."
The new me orders: Six-inch Veggie De-Lite on white, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cucumbers, jalapenos, green pepper, a little Sweet Onion sauce.  This option nets me approximately 270 calories (78% fewer), 2.5 grams of fat (96% fewer) and 495 milligrams of sodium (87% fewer).  Pretty damn good, right?
Part Two: An August challenge
The second thing I'll bring up in this blog entry is a new challenge I'm giving myself.  We'll call it the "fifty-mile month."  Basically, I want to push myself to walk at least fifty miles before the end of the month.  That works out to approximately 1.61 miles per day, spread out over 31 days (31 July - 30 August).  I'll do this by walking in the mornings before I go to work on my late days, and walking in the evenings on my early days.  Letting my inner stats nerd come out a little, I'll update my progress in various ways as I blog along.  Here's today's update:
Miles walked today: 3.52
Total miles walked: 5.25 (10.5%)
Days to go: 29
New daily average required to reach goal: 1.54 (down from 1.61)

See how far you really walk

I stumbled upon a great website for walkers like me.  Kansas City is not known as a pedestrian's paradise.  Like many American cities, much of its growth has happened post automobile, and therefore, to survive in Kansas City, one needs a car.

Fortunately, I live in one of Kansas City's oldest--and therefore, most walkable--neighborhoods.  According to www.walkscore.com, my neighborhood has a walk score of 83, indicating "very walkable."  This means a majority of basic services--grocery store, hospital, bars and nightclubs, pharmacies, etc.-- are within walking distance or available via public transit.  Therefore, I have tried to incorporate walking into the time I spend out and about in my neighborhood.  For instance, I live 3 blocks from my grocery store.  Not only do I feel like an absolute slob when I drive my car to buy food, but I tend to buy more when I can load it in the backseat and truck it home.

That gravy train has ended.  I found that ridiculous, so now, when I'm in the mood for groceries, I walk.  What a multitude of benefits this decision has!  First, there's the obvious: exercise.  Walking to the store gets my big butt up and moving.  But there are subtler benefits I'm discovering.  For instance, if I know I'll have to put on socks and sneakers and haul my butt to the store, I'm less likely to run there for a quick binge item, especially at night when the midnight snack demons visit.  Second, I only buy things I absolutely need, since I have enough extra weight to carry home on my body, and the way home is uphill.  This keeps me from adding little unhealthy "extras" to my shopping bag.  Third, if I'm craving something really bad, like Ben & Jerry's or mozzarella sticks, the walk gives me 15 minutes of solid exercise time to think it over, not to mention the "walk of shame" back home should I cave in, which I have yet to do.

This brings me to my discovery: www.mapmywalk.com.  For free (you have to put up with the occasional ad break, but that's life, right?), you can draw the route you follow on your walk and find out the exact distance.  Using a straight-forward system of pins placed on the now-ubiquitous blank Google Maps template, I found out that my walk from my house to Subway for a pile of lettuce and cucumber on some bread, and a stop-over at the grocery store for some Clif bars and blueberries, is a whopping 1.73 miles!  I had no idea that I walked almost two miles just while out to run some errands.  It was a great motivator, since the walk didn't tire me out too much, and on a Saturday night in my neighborhood, there was plenty to keep my attention.  Tomorrow, I'll see if I can walk two miles.

I broke my camera while taking my before picture

No, I didn't sit/step/fall on it.  It fell of the shelf I rested it on.  Goodbye, camera.  I've tried so hard to avoid any photos of me being taken in the past, so it's rather ironic that when I'm ready to show the world my 400-pound self, my camera shoots craps.  Oh well.  That's life, right?

I'm 22 years old, and I've been fat all my life.  I went on my first diet when I was 8 years old, and I think we can conclude that the results have been less than stellar.  In mid-2007, with a mix of dieting and steady exercise, I was down to about 330, and happier than I'd been in a long time.  Three years and 70 pounds later, I'm just a little less happy.  Wow, 70 pounds packed on this body in just 3 years.  What with some crazy changes in the workplace, balancing the non-stop drama of two older sisters and recently-divorced parents, not to mention putting myself through school, I've had a rough time managing the stress.  Usually, my stress has been eased by something that I pull out of my microwave.

Not anymore!  I'm cooking my own food and paying extra close attention to the ingredients in the food I'm buying.  I'm exercising every day, as much as my fatass can do for now, but it's leaps and bounds (or rather a brisk walk accompanied by a brief rest) away from the way I used to spend my free time.  I'm giving up my best friend, Diet Pepsi, of which I drank upwards of 2 liters a day, and trading it in for the much more sensible (and cheap) water.
