Before After

The Dr. said...Low Carb...YUCK!!

the results are in on my type II diabetic scare. or should i say is still scary but i haven't hit a point of no return. thank God! i did the 3 month avg. test and it came back a 6.8 which isn't the best "but" its still before a 7.0 "the point of no return". i also weighed in a 224.6 this morning. i weighed in at 224.0 yesterday but i bet its b/c of the change in my eating pattern. well the doctor consoled me on prevention and its about time! just saying your pre-diabetic doesn't mean you know what that is or how to stop it or prevent it. he recommend a protein diet....yes i know fun wow! i have been on them before and it took me forever to get on the ball w/ low carb. eating not to mention how sick i would feel which would make me go off it before the third day. anyway, i have started a low carb. diet yesterday (i guess kinda of an atkins south beach mix-they both start out the same) i had a terrible headache all day and that old worry of mine about getting hungry but for sugar load foods came back into play but i stuck w/ it. this morning was too bad and i'm already to the afternoon. i just might make this my first try. my big struggle now is that i know i can eat as much protein as i want and i have gotten use to eating smaller portions but w/ the "permission" to eat more i find myself drifting off to what protein i can eat w/out being hungry. so just as one battle starts to end another battle begins. i am realizing something i guess i already knew. the battle w/ my weight and health will rage on for my life time. the sooner i realize that full the better prepared i will be and more successful. so if anyone else is out there on a low carb eating plan give me a shout...i can use all the help i can get w/ suggestions and i'd be glad to share what i'm doing...=) happy sunday!!!!

low carb ick

I'm "pre-diabetic" as well and I've done all those low-carb diets. I lost weight on the Zone diet and South Beach, but I couldn't stick with them. I only lasted in Atkins for a week before my body told me I simply could not eat all that meat.

Jenny Craig seems to be working the best for me--my sugar is under control. The exchange system is very similar to The Diabetic Diet. My doctor just said JC had too many processed carbs in some dishes, like the cake and pasta. He just asked me to make smart choices when selecting my meals and to think about substituting at least one whole grain meal every day. I started buying Amy's vegetarian frozen dishes to eat for lunch, because they're all whole grain and all natural. And tasty!

You can eat carbs--you just have to keep portions small and choose those whole grains so that they turn to sugar more slowly in your body.  The key to not using up your insulin is to not eat a carb overload in one meal. Space them out throught the day. Also, just losing weight makes a huge difference in controlling these issues as well.

I'm an endless source of info on this topic--feel free to ask whatever you're wondering about.

Here's a decent web site that give you and introduction to managing blood sugar in your diet.  I'll pass on more tips to you as I have time. Good luck!

low carb diet

I also did the South Beach thing for a while... it's hard to stick with it strictly because there isn't enough variety for me and I didn't like some of the foods it suggested, but I took the basics (lean protein, no refined sugar or white flour) and am using them on Weight Watchers.  Doing a strict program that includes portion control will at least help you learn what types of thingsyou can eat.  WW also has a program called Core that has an approved list of foods, rather than particular recipes, that is good for controlling blood sugar.

Congratulations on your progress so far and on making the commitment to take care of yourself!
