"I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue..."

Does anyone remember Lloyd Bridges saying that during the movie "Airplane"?  If you've never seen it, rent it!  It is one of the funniest movies.  Definately mindless and senseless, but really funny!

Well, today was the week 1 weigh in for the Biggest Loser group that I'm a part of!  I didn't have the amazing 20-30 pound loss that was on the show on Tuesday.  Then again, I didn't start at over 400 pounds, either!

But, I did lose almost 5 pounds!  I was hoping for 7, so I was close.  Actually...4.8 lbs to be exact.  So, I guess I need to step up the exercise a bit!

I'm shooting to lose 6 lbs this week.  Today's going to be tough since I have my parents and a couple of friends coming over for dinner.  I'm a cook and sure didn't learn it from my mom.  Don't get me wrong, she can cook.  But, it's more "midwest" cooking.  You know...some meat in a caserole dish with Cream of Something poured over it, then baked until you don't recognize it.

So, I decided to go ahead and cook it up, but control my own portions.  On the menu:

  • Chicken Cordon Bleu (I put on 4 lbs just saying that!)
  • Spinach salad with mandarin oranges
  • Snow peas sauteed in virgin olive oil and garlic
  • Twice baked potato caserole (basically, it's twice baked but in a dish instead of stuffing back into the shell)
  • And, for desert, Moon Cake.  (Though, I used low fat French Vanilla Pudding, Light Cream Cheese and 2% milk to make it.  That cut the calories WAY down!).

Will I have dessert?  Of course.  It wouldn't be polite to have my guests enjoying dessert and none for me.  Will I have half of the serving (or a quarter) that I would have had a week ago?  Yep...just a small portion.  I'm looking forward to it!

Have  a great weekend everone!  Can't wait to puruse some blogs this evening!

Using the Remote for Good...Not Evil

I was taking a look at some blog recent posts.  I will admit, I'm intrigued by catchy titles.  Oh, and when I open a post, I comment (just so you know).  The way I figure, if it's interesting enough to open, the least I can do is say something.

Anyway, newteacher had a post on her blog this afternoon about OnDemand and doing a workout later in the evening.

Arrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh, I had a lightbulb moment!    I don't have OnDemand, but I do have FitTV as one of our cable stations!  Now, if it were near the network channels, or ESPN and FoxSports, I would see it often.  The problem is that I go to what's comfortable.  At 9:00pm, when there's nothing that interests me, I'll go to the local chanel 13 and watch Frasier.  I don't think in terms of going to FitTV.

Instead of the ole fall backs and repeats (which, I admit that I could watch Everybody Loves Raymond all day long!), I need to put it on channel 134!  They have so many different "classes" available, including healthy cooking shows!  So basically, I need to switch off of the sitcom repeats and do a 30 minute work out.  (Or 20 or 10 or 5...whatever there's time to do!)

Old habits are hard to break.  But if I can, it could make a huge personal difference!  (Thanks for the reminder via your blog, newteacher!)

Salmon Tamales and DDR...The weekend is here!

Busy morning, but lazy afternoon today!  I got up bright and early (I have no idea why!) and drank a bottle of water right away.  It seems that if I start the morning with a full bottle, I don't feel the need to jump on breakfast quite so fast.  Then, it was Farmer's Market Day!  YEA!

I picked up some fresh green beans (love those!), snow peas, some peppers and bunches of really pretty brocolli!  I also picked up some of Molly's Tamales.    Seriously good stuff!  But, I decided to get some salmon tomales today.  For whatever reason, that just sounded good.  I have them in the freezer and will probably eat those a bit later in the week.

I got home from the market early (about 8:30 and I was back home) and decided to jump on the Wii Fit.  I did 30 minutes of aerobics, 20 minutes of strength training, and 30 minutes of Yoga.  Still only 10:00 in the morning.  My son worked late last night, so I had let him sleep in...but not too much.  He was up by about 10:15.  Why?  Because I made cinnamon rolls.  Granted...just the cheap Pillsberry ones, but he love them.  That was pretty tough for me, but he really needs the calories.

So, 1/2 cinnamon roll later (I really only ate 1/2!) with some cantaloup (?) and pineapple with a cup of coffee, I was full.  Plus, with it being later in the morning, I skipped a morning snack.  I still wasn't even hungry when lunch rolled around, but I had a small bowl of cottage cheese and some pineapple.  yummy!  Again, lunch was later in the day, so I think I'll just plan on dinner around 5:00.  We normally eat around 6:30, but I try to eat earlier when my son's not here.

So, this afternoon I'm just doing some laundry and sitting here on the couch watching the Arizona Cardinals...and they are winning.  Seriously...hell hath froze over!  The cards are up 30-17.  in the 4th quarter and were just called for excessive celebration.  Personally, I think it should be a celebrating average.  Since the Cards haven't done too much in the last ummmm 60 years, they haven't celebrated.  They are hosting their first playoff in 61 years...and they get a flag for celebrating?  That's OK boys...it's worth the yardage!

I think that after the game (but before dinner) I might do Dance Dance Revolution for a bit.  I didn't get the game for Wii because of anyone in the house except me!  That one is MY game.  Mostly because it is a serious cardio work out done in 3-4 minute increments.  And, you don't even feel like you're working out because you're just dancing!  Fun Stuff.

Well, I suppose I'd best fill in the exercise log and food diary.  I really like charting that because it's a reality check to see it in writing.  Do I really need to spend those extra minutes on the computer?  No, not at all.  But, it's a sense of accountability.  So, I'm going to try really hard to have it all logged before dinner time so that I know where I'm sitting for the day.  That might force me into reduced portions for dinner, also!

Good times...yes...good times!

New Year...Getting on Track!

I've decided that enough is enough.  I've put on too much weight and it's time for a change.  Today.

I've joined a Biggest Loser challenge.  I've found that I need this.  I need to "compete" but still support.  I'm hoping that everyone in the group loses pounds and reaches their goal.  And of course, I'm going to do the same.

Probably the hardest part is that I have an 18 year old that's a Senior in high school.  He's tall and skinny.  Really thin!  So, I have to have foods around the house that allow him to gain weight (getting ready for the baseball season), yet I need to avoid his foods.  Nice.

Anyway, I think that it comes down to portion controll for me.  At least it does right now.

So, here's to a new year and new goals!
