As early as age 3, overweight children face teasing, rejection, bullying and other forms of stigmatization from other children, finds a U.S. study in the July issue of the journal Psychological Bulletin.
The researchers at Yale University and the University of Hawaii noted that overweight children who face social abuse are two to three times more likely to report suicidal thoughts and to suffer health issues such as eating disorders and high blood pressure, the Associated Press reported.
The study authors reviewed all research on children and weight-related bias conducted over the past 40 years.
"The stigmatization directed at obese children by their peers, parents, educators and others is pervasive and often unrelenting," the researchers wrote.
They said discrimination against overweight children is as important a problem as racial discrimination or inequity suffered by disabled children, and needs to be taken equally seriously.
This study along with other information about weight related discrimination really makes a great point. I am told over and over (even by people who are overweight) that people are not treated differently because they are overweight, people react differently to the world because they are overweight. What a bunch of CRAP. Yes, people have more confidence when they are thinner and probably do react differently. But I KNOW that I am treated differently when I am overweight sometimes JUST because I am overweight. I am judged and looked down. I am seen as less of a person. I also recently read an article about getting thin to help your career. The article titled "are you fit enough to climb the corporate ladder" stated that employers pick thinner people because of "health" related issues and productivity and they avoid overweight people. It really upset me to read this article. If employers want to advance people because of their health choices maybe they should also look at things like: Does the employee smoke Does the employee have a monogamous relationship Does the employee exercise (not always indicated by thin vs. fat) Does the employee drink excessively Does the employee drive safely (what is their driving record?) etc..... You get my poin
I am just frustrated because I am trying to lose weight. I already feel self conscious. I have a lot of negativity about myself and what I have done to myself.
Facts are facts, people who are overweight are treated differently. I guess that is the world we live in. Right or wrong it is true. Of course it is WRONG, even if people try to justify it. And no matter where my self esteem is I do not deserve to be treated like a second class citizen and neither does anyone else. Obviously someone thinks the discrimination and inequity of obese people should be addressed. No one is perfect. Some people just have addictions and problems that are easier to hide.

I have a lot of thoughts about weight loss. Sometimes I think I should just keep them to myself. Sometimes I want to share my feelings because I just think it seems right. I always hope there are a lot of people who feel like I do, but of course I worry that I am just a nutjob!
I have probably lost and gained a thousand pounds in my adult life. I am working to find my way to my goal weight and to never lose sight of it again.
I think I have a lot of issues with emotional eating. I think I don't even realize I do it anymore. I am hoping if I get control of my emotional tie to food I will be able to stop this fat roller coaster.
I have over a hundred pounds to lose. That is hard for me to say but it is true. It is a long road ahead, but I am confident I can do it if I never give up on myself.
