Before After

Renewed Motivation

WOW!   All I can say is that this season of Biggest Loser has had to be the most inspiring and most motivating for me!  After last season, I was pretty much ready to never watch again if the producers were going to allow the cruelty and vengefulness of a very few to EVER occur again and ruin the inspiration that so many of us gain from Biggest Loser!  However, I have never been inspired as much as I have from this season….by the young…the old…the originally super morbidly obese…and everyone in between!   Yes…there was game play that made it frustrating at times...but game play is part of the game!  For the most part, though,  everyone seemed to be supportive of each other, and even in this last couple of weeks, I’ve been moved to tears by the courage of contestants that weren’t even my favorites!

As I posted in my “veiled” post last night, I NEVER would have seen Helen being the winner, but when she came out...there was no question in my mind that she had won, even before getting on the scale! Helen was not one of my favorites…but seeing her accomplish what she has at an age(she’s just a year older than me) when weight loss for us women is supposed to slow to almost nothing…leaves me with no excuse NOT to complete my weight loss journey! And JERRY!  The “age” myth as far as weight loss is concerned was truly blown out of the water last night!  Congratulations to Helen, Jerry and EVERY contestant…the courage and determination of ALL of them has inspired me, and I will be rewatching some of these episodes online whenever I need the extra boost to continue my journey!

Speaking of my journey…work had been super stressful since I returned from doing the Country Music ½ marathon 2 ½ weeks ago…lol…what else is new?!?  No sooner did I get home than my coworker was off for a week, leaving me to cover her job AND my job…one night I and my boss and another coworker were at work until almost 1am!  So stress really reared it’s ugly head.  Sometimes I managed the stress well…sometimes I didn’t.  If I had change in my pocket, to the machine I would go!  That was frustrating, so since about midweek last week…I’ve finally found a solution to that problem…I do not keep any change with me at work!  That makes me reach for the healthy snacks that I take to work with me, and not having any money to go to the snack machines, I’m not tempted to even go look!

On the exercise front, after enjoying my ½ marathon in Nashville so much, I wanted to come back home and jump right back into working on running longer/farther without stopping.  However, my right leg/IT band have had other ideas!    My right outer knee felt tight and inflamed for several days after I got home, but with ice, ibuprofen and rest, that swelling and inflammation was gone by the next weekend after my ½ marathon.  What remained, though, was soreness at the outside of my knee, and the muscle just at the back bend of my  right knee.  It really has been reminiscent of my severe IT band strain that made it difficult for me to step up/down a stair or to squat or lunge when I got the IT band strain  from overdoing it with my walking frequency a couple of years ago.  I don’t believe this strain happened from  continuous overuse, though…but probably from the numerous hills that I travelled in the ½ marathon.  Even though they were gradual hills, and didn’t seem as daunting to me as the short steeper grade hills that I walk/run at Shelby Farms, I believe trying to keep a faster pace  walking on the upside of the frequent long hills I probably put more strain on my bothersome IT band than I thought.  After the inflammation went down, that same pain of going up and down steps when I had this before caused me to grimace every time I hit the steps outside our front door at work, and I could only barely bend my right knee to do a lunge without it aching.  After resting it though, and icing it when I can, I can now lunge a bit further, so that is encouraging.  This past Saturday, I WALKED 5 miles for the first time since I’d been home, although I had wanted so badly to get out a couple of days after getting home.  I can’t run the risk of prolonging the IT band strain any more than I have to, though, by trying to add pressure by running.  Like when I had it before, normal walking doesn’t irritate it too much, so until I can lunge without pain, walking it will be!

Hope everyone else enjoyed Biggest Loser as much as I did!  I’m normally an American Idol fan too…but BL trumped AI this year!  And after seeing Helen win, I have new motivation to make moving toward 50 the healthiest years I’ve had since my early 30’s!  Forty may have knocked me on my butt…but I intend to show 50 who’s boss!

We're Not Getting Older...We're Getting Better! :-)

Oh...my...GOODNESS!  Did anyone see that coming?!?  I DIDN'T!

I won't even mention any names or even what I'm talking about for you West Coast'ers...LOL...but 80-90% of those of us on EP, I think KNOW what I'm talking about!

All I will say is...MY TITLE SAYS IT ALL!

I'll post what I would have liked to post tonight, tomorrow...after everyone has seen  "the show that shall not be named"!

Race Report-Country Music Half Marathon-April 25, 2009

Seems hard to believe it’s been a week since I did the Country Music Half-Marathon…but I’m counting down the weeks to the next one…51 to be exact!  LOL…as Dottie at “Dottie’s Weight Loss Zone” says in her email newsletters, take a seat in your comfy chair and grab your cold glass of water…this is going to be a LONG one!

As far as preparation, I felt much better prepared physically for my 2nd half marathon than my 1st that I did last November.  Through my training, I had gotten in 2 run/walks of 12 miles, and 1 of the full 13.1 miles.  I pulled a groin muscle before my 1st half, so that hindered some of my preparation in those few final weeks before the Route 66 Half Marathon.  Just life in general, though, and circumstances, had me nervous in the week leading up to the Country Music Half!  First, I started having sinus troubles starting to flair up 3 days before…I did not need THAT!  So I started living off of Dayquil/Nyquil caps! The weather also was worrisome…the Country Music Half Marathon Homepage states “58 degrees at the start/65 degrees at the finish”…which I guess has been the average for the 9 preceding years this race had been in existence!  Even before I left Memphis…almost 200 miles to the west of Nashville…weather forecasters were predicting almost record heat for the race weekend.  Nashville sits farther north in the middle of the state, and often is cooler than Memphis, but no such good fortune this time!  It was predicted to be just as hot as Memphis!

Still, I had been so looking forward to this, and nothing was going to deter me!  My sister Leslie and I left out around 8:45am Friday morning for the 3 hour drive to Nashville.  As promised…it was a very warm day!  We arrived in Nashville around noon, and our first stop was to pick up my race packet and the Expo at the Nashville Convention Center.  For my 1st half marathon in Tulsa, we only had opportunity to rush in and pick up our race packets and rush out, so I was excited to get to this one early enough to browse around a bit.  Packet pickup was a breeze.  I did ask one of the volunteers confirming my registration what I needed to do to change my expected race time from 3:15 to 3:30…she said “Oh, honey…not a thing…you stay right where you are…we’re the FUN group and we’ll take care of ya’!”  LOL…one less line to stand in!  This was the first race of any kind, including my first half marathon, that I had received anything other than the standard cotton race shirt.  This one was a Sugoi technical wicking shirt in red, with the race info/emblem emblazoned across the top of the front of the shirt…NICE!  I walked around the expo, having one place I for sure knew I wanted to visit…the "One More Mile" booth with all it’s race slogan T-shirts and accessories.  I picked up a wicking T-shirt that said “I know, I know…I’m almost there”, and a tank that said “13.1-Been there, Run that  I also picked up a pair of sterling silver wire earrings with the “13.1” engraved in the charm on each one.

I spent about 1 ½ - 2 hours in the expo…I heard them announce that Dane and Blaine from the current season of “Biggest Loser” were there at one of the booths, but I couldn’t find it! After Dane’s exit from the show, his “update” segment showed him having finished a marathon. It came to light that the BL production team picked him and his wife up 3 miles out from the finish to get them to the finish line before the course closed for their filming purposes, and a lot of marathoners made a big stink about it.  Dane did go back and finished the miles he skipped, but in order for there to be no question of the legitimacy of him finishing a marathon, he made the Country Music Marathon his “Race for Redemption”.  I really would have loved to have found the booth and seen them and got my picture taken with them, because no matter how far he had run in that first marathon, he and his cousin Blaine were an inspiration to me! Here is the link to some of Dane's Race picture, along with Blaine's race pictures.

I definitely stimulated the economy before I left the expo…besides my “One More Mile” purchases, I bought a CMM Marathon/Half-Marathon “Finisher” long sleeve technical shirt, and a short sleeve “10 yr. anniversary” CMM technical shirt. One of the best purchases I made was probably the cheapest…there was a booth for Drymax socks, and they were demonstrating their socks in their booth.  They soaked the sock in a container of water, then blotted the outside of the sock on a paper towel…wet as expected.  They turned the sock inside out, though, and blotted, and it DID NOT leave a wet spot on the paper towel!  The socks were 3 pair/$20 or 1/$10, so after seeing the demonstration, I thought they couldn’t hurt to try, so I bought the 3 pairs.  I also purchased my shuttle pass for race morning on the way out.

By this time it was 2:30, so my sister and I headed to the Opry Mills shopping area to a restaurant she had been recommended….the Rainforest Café…very unique restaurant, and good food if you are ever in the Nashville area…I believe there are a few others around the country. It looks like a restaurant geared towards kids, and kids will love it, but it is very beautiful and different inside with it's feeling of sitting in a rainforest, so we adults liked it too!   After eating, we shopped a little, and then headed to check into our hotel around 5pm. We stayed at the Embassy Suites close to the airport, and on Saturday morning, I would catch a shuttle from one of the hotels a couple of miles away.  Knowing there would be crowds in almost every restaurant, especially with 30,000+ extra people in town for the race plus a lot of their families, and HOPING to get in bed early, we opted to go the fast food route.  I’m not a pasta person, so probably wouldn’t normally do the pasta the night before anyway, so we grabbed Back Yard Burger and took it back to the hotel.  I got the Jr. Back Yard Burger with a LARGE Seasoned Fry…LOL..that was my carbo load! I then started laying out all my “stuff” for Saturday morning to have it all ready when I woke up, right down to my makeup!

About 9-9:30 I hopped into bed, and probably should have never turned on my computer!  Besides catching up on emails, I had a Facebook message from a friend…frantic that both she and her husband were not both accounted for in our class reunion “paid” list, so did some emailing back and forth with the person responsible for that to get it straightened out.  By the time I finished, it was almost 11pm, and I HAD TO get some sleep…not that that would be hard…or so I thought!  I fell right to sleep.  Then…at about 12:30am…I bolted awake.  I didn’t remember seeing the sticker on my race bib that the girl at the expo said she stuck on for my shuttle pass!  So I jumped out of bed and went to check.  There was a sticker there with “CMM” on it, so I hoped that was what was going to get me on my shuttle to the race!  I got back in bed.  The self-doubt started.  I bought the “Finisher” shirt…but what if I didn’t finish?  That would be money wasted on a shirt I could never wear!  I started worrying about how hot it was going to be.  What if with the hot weather, my blisters did me in?   LOL…I don’t have to tell you that my mind was racing, and I never fell back asleep, so I finally got out of bed to start getting ready around 3:45am, having had 1 ½ hour of sleep!  I choked down my cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese, but felt almost like I was going to “lose” that!  I really began wondering if maybe I just shouldn’t go!

Once my sister dropped me at the shuttle site at 5:15am, though, and I found the sticker on my bib WAS my shuttle pass, I settled onto the comfy bus, and relaxed…finally feeling like I could go to sleep! A girl sat in the seat next to me from WA state that was doing the full marathon, so we talked on the way to the start line, and that helped keep me awake. We got to the race site, and I figured I better make one last pit stop before the race.  Got in one line of “permanent” standing restrooms, and a girl finally came out and said 10 of the stalls were not working, so headed for the bank of 20+ porta-potties. I stood…and I stood…in line!  How long does it take to pee?!?  At 6:55, I figured as hot as it was going to be, I would sweat off whatever fluid was in me, so I headed to find my corral in the sea of 30,000+ race participants!  There were people as far as the eye could see!

The race started at 7am sharp, but each corral was not released for 2-3 minutes after the previous.  As we had passed a bank temp sign walking towards the start line, it read 75 degrees…at just a few minutes before 8!  My corral finally started at 8:01am!

Knowing how hot it was going to be, and how sleep deprived I was, I had come to terms that I would be happy to finish in the same time that I finished my 1st half marathon…or just to finish, for that matter!  I started out at a jog…and before I knew it, 1 mile was completed.  I completed the 1st mile in 13:40, 2nd in 14:24, 3rd in 15:31…then settled into somewhere between 15:30-16:30 pace for the rest of the race between running and walking, with just 1 mile climbing over an average 17:00 pace through the whole 13.1…with the conditions as hot as they were…I was happy with that!  I had heard how hilly the course was supposed to be, but the hills seemed to be the long, gradual inclines that have long, gradual declines that are GREAT to run down!  I walked up the upside of the hills as quickly as I could, trying to keep my stride short(thanks for that tip from last Nov., Andrea!),  and then ran on the gradual downhills and as far as I could on the flat parts of the course.

Course support was out of this world!  Not only the spectator support, but water/Cytomax stops at every mile, and sometimes more than 1 time in a mile. I got into a routine of drinking a glass of Cytomax, a glass of water, and then another glass of water to take a couple of sips, then to pour over my back! Water sprays every mile or so, and residents that added their additional sprinklers/hose spray!  There were also orange/apple quarters, and I took advantage of those every time they came up, even though I had my Clif Shot blocks, and GU.  Someone towards the end of the course was even standing with a big tray and was passing out their homemade pumpkin muffins with chocolate chips…had never had that combination, but it was GOOD!

People-watching made the miles pass faster too…and so many people to watch…right down to the older southern gentleman sitting at the curb of his front yard, sipping champagne/mimosas and eating strawberries as we passed…go look at the top banner slideshow of the marathon/half-marathon website, and see for yourself!  And the girl that hula-hopped through the entire half marathon, and stayed just in sight in front of me most of the 13.1 miles...this is the link to her story. And the MUSIC!  Band at every mile, and not all country music…in fact, most not!  Some of them seemed to feed off our support as we passed and cheered as much as we fed off their music!

I did hit my “wall” at about 11 miles, but as in my 1st half marathon, I had come too far, so I pushed through it, and before I knew it…Titans Stadium…where the finish line was…was in sight!

Early in the race, I had decided to only look at my “ Total Time elapsed” on my Garmin instead of worrying about my pace, and that served me well.  As I ran into the stretch to the finish line, it looked like I was on pace to accomplish my goal of finishing in 3:30, and according to my Garmin time, I did. But I’ve finally figured out the time discrepancy between my Garmin and official race time.  I have my Garmin set to “pause” whenever I stop or slow down to almost stopped, and although I made no “porta-potty” stops, I did  stop to drink water/ eat fruit in both my Tulsa and Nashville half’s for a few seconds each time, whereas my race tag/chip doesn’t stop, so I’m now more comfortable with my “official” race times being correct, and will remember to set my Garmin not to pause when I stop to keep the two times as close to within each other as possible!  I gathered the energy to run across the finish line, and my official time was:

3:31:44

My official time for my first half marathon was 3:40:46, so I guess you could say I “PR’ed” in my second half by 9 minutes, 2 seconds!  I missed my personal goal by 1 minute, 44 seconds, but considering that the temp read 87 degrees when I finished, and doing my second half better in hot weather and sleep-deprived than I did my first in cool weather, I AIN’T COMPLAININ’!

I LOVED this race, and can’t wait to do it again next year. My new socks did their job, and I had one small blister on my right ball of my foot that once I lanced, was DONE, instead of the HUGE blisters I had on the balls of both feet, and covering both of my heel pads in my first half!  Being practically blisterless sure added to my enjoyment of this race experience!  For the number of racers and their families that came into Nashville for this race, everything ran like clockwork, and even people who had no interest in the race or running could not have been more helpful!  With this just being my 2nd half marathon, and doing my  2nd yearly cycle of races, I will probably try others along the way along with my hometown St. Jude Half, but I will always make room for the Country Music Half Marathon!

On a sad note…I’m beginning to wonder if I’m a “jinx” on other runners.  In the half marathon that Andrea and I did in November, which was my first, a young 21 yr. old man died on the course at about mile 9-10.  It was the first death in the race’s history.  Last Saturday, a 26 year old soldier from Ft. Campbell died just after crossing the finish line of the half marathon in just a couple of minute over 2 hours… a healthy guy!  In it’s 10 year history, this was the first death at the Country Music Half Marathon. Here is a link to 2 TV news videos about the soldier and the weather condtions for the race, and newspaper story about the soldier's death, and unusual weather conditions for this race.

I’m just about recuperated, and although I didn’t seem to wind up with any unusual pain or damage, my IT Band, and the outside of my knee where the IT Band attaches to the knee have been inflamed, but as of this morning, the tightness in my knee seems to be almost gone, so hoping to get back out and “do my thing” in the next day or two!  I believe my experience at the Country Music Half has gotten me HOOKED, and will help to keep me motivated to do better in my running/walking, and weight loss! Over the summer, I will probably not do more than 7 or 8 miles at the most for “long runs” on Saturdays. Nothing but a few 5k’s and hopefully the 10k that is run in my neighborhood the end of June are planned for the summer, but come the first of August, GAME ON again in preparation for the St. Jude Half Marathon on my birthday weekend in December! LOL...I still will be slow compared to everyone else, but ANY improvement for me is a victory!

Looking forward to meeting all the EP'ers that are planning/thinking about coming to Memphis for the St. Jude Half Marathon, but you all also need to keep a space open for the end of April 2010, and come do the Country Music Half Marathon too...it's a BLAST running with 30,000+ of your closest running buddies!

Checkin' in...

It's been right at 2 months since I last posted. You're probably expecting me to write that I've fallen off the wagon and fallen back into my old ways, and that's the reason I haven't posted.  Thankfully, NOT the case!

As far as my weight, I've maintained somewhere between 207 and 209.  It was my hope to have broken below 200 by the time I do my Country Music Half Marathon this next weekend,  but that's not gonna' happen!  I believe just in the last week or two, I've read someone's blog that talked about getting comfortable at a certain weight.  Although I definitely want to break under 200, and continue on to my goal, I think I've found myself complacent and "comfortable" to just be in the 2-single digits, and enjoy that I shop in the misses department again!  Training for my 2nd half marathon, I've been sitting at 10+ miles for my highest mileage day of the week over the past month or so, and as I told a coworker, I think I've been "running to eat" instead of "eating to run"...meaning, even though I haven't lapsed into binge eating,  I've used the high mileage days as an excuse to eat a bit extra rather than to use the calorie expenditure to further my weight loss.  So where I may not fluctuate more than a lb. or 2, I haven't really pushed to lose either...over the 3 or 4 months of training for my first half marathon last year, I lost between 25-30 lbs. just through that process, along with being extra diligent with my eating plan.

Fitness wise, as I just mentioned, this coming Saturday is my 2nd half marathon at the Country Music Half Marathon in Nashville!  It has been great to not have to deal with some of the strains and small injuries that interrupted a bit of my training for my first half marathon, and through training for this 2nd, I've gotten to complete  as much as 12 miles twice, and then did the whole distance this past Wednesday.  Today, I dropped down to 7 miles, and and anything I do this week before next Saturday, will be no more than 2 or 3 miles at a time.  It is my goal to complete this half in just 7 minutes faster than the last...so 3 1/2 hours as opposed to 3:37 that I finished my first...lol...I don't ask for much to make me happy!  I'm being realistic too, in knowing that probably until I lose about 20 more lbs,  I'm not going to really be able to carry my weight much faster or longer periods of running.  I have been training using a run/walk sequence, and unless there is something that prevents me from following that same sequence on Saturday, I plan to run/walk as much of the race as I can.  Although I haven't gained great jumps in my pace, I've been encouraged to see that according to my Garmin, when I'm doing my run sequence, I'm able to more consistently maintain a 4.5-5mph speed throughout those segments.

As more and more friends have seen me that haven't seen me in a long time,  it's been fun to tell them how I've lost the weight I have...mostly over the last year, though I started the journey almost 3 years ago.  A couple of friends I've had lunch with, and they've just wanted to talk about how I've prepared for doing my half-marathons, and I've enjoyed sharing my experience with them, and a couple are now actively  working toward running again, as I did, by working from walking into a walk/run sequence.

I  had the experience, last night, of going to an informal "pre-reunion" gathering of about 20 classmates that showed up for dinner at a BBQ restaurant in the town I grew up.  I was very shy in high school, so even though I had gone to school and been casual friends through 12 years of school with a some of the popular group in high school, I've always been intimidated by these types of reunion gatherings!  Walking in the door last night, all that insecurity came rushing back in!

But I was very surprised at the reaction of 2 or 3 of the guys there that approached me, and one--our class valedictorian, star baseball player, and most accomplished at our 10 yr reunion--who said he has been following my progress of preparation for my half marathon on my Facebook, and said he really could tell how committed I am to my fitness/running goals.  He just retired from his military career as an officer about 3 years back and working as a civilian now in the IT field, so of course he had to adhere to a fitness regimen in the military, but after being out for a few years, said he's just been trying to get back into a fitness routine and running by doing some 5k's and will be doing a 10k in 3 weeks.  LOL...he's also "single again", so it will be fun to encourage him through Facebook in his running/fitness endeavors, and keep up with him as we move toward our "formal" reunion on August 1!

Another guy, who I had already been emailing and chatting with through Facebook, was there.  He's married, but he's one of those guys that seemed kind of nerdy in high school, but at the 10 year reunion and after, really had become a "hottie"(he was in the military too), but is a super sweet guy.  Just through our emails and chatting I had given him some idea of my weight loss journey, but last night was going to be his first time seeing me (outside of a head shot picture) in almost 20 years!  Since we all wound up in booths, and I came in a little late, our initial conversation was over the back of a booth.  As he was getting ready to leave though, he came to get a hug, and as he hugged me, he whispered in my ear "You look GREAT!"   That made my day....night...year!  Even though he's happily married, it meant a lot to have someone that I really admire as nice looking to complement me in that way.  I think that comment can become the motivation and catylst for me to really step it up in my eating and fitness goals as I move into serious weight-loss and shape up mode the last 3+ months before my reunion to try to look even better by my high school reunion!

After my half marathon this next weekend, I will have 2 1/2-3 months to really concentrate on other fitness goals besides just running/walking, although I intend to keep that up, and even plan to train for a 10k that is run in my neighborhood at the end of June.  I won't go into serious half-marathon mode again until the first of August, just as my reunion is over.   So after this next Saturday's half marathon, it's all about "Reunion Readiness" for me!

Work, since the first of the year, has been non-stop hectic, so that was a big part of why I stopped posting.  LOL...no one really seemed to notice that I stopped, and those that did have contacted me in other ways(THANKS, ya'll!), so at least wanted to post an update of what has gone on with me over the past couple of months in my weight loss and fitness journey!  I still love following all of your blogs, and commenting when I can, but just don't know how often I can update my blog, and not feeling pressured to do that has taken some pressure off of me with work being so stressful.  I will try to update during/after my half marathon weekend this next weekend, though!  Hope everyone has a great week!

Bummed...

...knee, that is!

When I posted Thursday night after my jog/walk, I was talking about how strong my legs felt, and how much easier it seemed transitioning back and forth between walking and running. When I went to bed Thursday night, all felt fine...not even any IT band pain.

However, when I got up on Friday, I was noticing twinges of pain in my right knee...not constant pain, but throughout the day, the twinges of pain that feel like someone sticking a pin in your knee.  I was surprised, because it felt fine after Thursday night.  I was thinking that with the cold and wet weather, it might just be the knee acting up...about 4 1/2 years ago, I slipped on some black ice while walking at night in my neighborhood, and busted my right knee pretty bad.  No structural damage, but ever since then, I've had some bouts with pain in that knee when the weather gets cold and wet, so I've wondered if I didn't develop some osteo-arthritis in that knee from that injury.

Anyway, since Friday, I've been taking ibuprofen and I iced, even though I really couldn't see any swelling in the knee.  Being someone that at my age, doesn't want to risk overdoing it when I have knee pain, I pretty much had decided that 10 miles yesterday(Saturday), might be asking too much, and with it raining, that pretty much wiped out most of the day.  Being in peri-menopause,  I have nights where I really just can't sleep well, and last night was one of those, so after falling asleep around 3am this morning, I just woke up about an hour ago!  The twinges didn't come as often as the day went on Saturday, and so far so good, since I've woken up today!  I was debating heading to Shelby Farms and walking my 10 miles, but decided a few days rest for my knee wouldn't hurt, and I will start back in with my regular routine on Tuesday afternoon.  I have 9 weeks left before my half marathon, and being at 10 miles, should have more than enough time to build up to where I need to, and then taper that last week or two.  I was supposed to be out of town in a couple of weekends, but my brother informed me yesterday that wasn't going to be a good weekend for him, so that gives me back another weekend I thought I was going to have to miss.  I still feel guilty, because I hate interrupting my training schedule!  I'm going to try to compensate later on today, though, by getting some strength and core training in and trying out my new Bosu trainer that I got at Costco last week that I had been saving up for!

Eating has been on plan for the weekend...I'm "safe" at home, so for me to get off plan, I have to go out, and go get what I would be craving to get off plan!

In the rain yesterday, I did make a Costco run to get some more of my La Tortilla Factory Smart & Delicious Low-Carb/High Fiber Whole Wheat Tortillas, and some tangerines.  I am loving these tortillas!  I looked for a link on their site to the tortillas I bought, but they still have them as a "new & coming" product, so can't post a direct link....  From my package, though, these have 80 calories for a LARGE tortilla, 3 gms of fat, 18 gms carbs-12 gms fiber = 6 net gms carbs, and 8 grams of protein!  They are listed as one of Hungry Girl's staples, so I was thrilled to find these last week at my Costco!  Since these are the larger tortillas, almost every day last week for lunch, I would take one and spread with my Laughing Cow cheese, add either my deli thin ham slices, or cut up chicken breast, and still be able to load with my veggies, and it was delicious, and much more satisfying than some of my pre-packaged frozen meals!

Not much else going on...hope everyone has had a good weekend!

Blog Post...TAKE TWO...Abbreviated version!

Just a few minutes ago, I was finishing up a post detailing the past 36 hours or so since I last posted, and since my laptop battery has long ago died, I accidentally knocked my A/C cord out of it's socket on the back of my laptop, and lost all that I had written!  Can't blame EP...just clumsy me!  So I plan for this to be a condensed version of what I had written...will see how that works out!

Although I did well through the first half of yesterday with eating on plan, work stress got the best of me, and where I still had almost half of my calories left as I went into my afternoon snack, the "munch monster" got the best of me, and by dinner time, I had pretty much wiped out my calorie allotment for the day! About 3 of us wound up working until 8pm last night, and one coworker's husband was grilling a hamburger for her...she asked if we wanted one....why not?  I'd already trashed being on plan...might as well do it right!  I KNOW that is not the right attitude to have...so no one needs to inform me of that!  The difference now is that I've come far enough in this journey to know exactly what I needed to do, and that was to get right back on plan today!

I did have an on plan day today!  Like Tuesday, though, I had to talk myself into making it to Shelby Farms, but once I got there and finished my workout, I was so glad I did!  We went from beautiful spring-like weather yesterday with temps in the mid to upper 70's, back to a cold, breezy day today! It was 41 when I got to Shelby Farms.  When I saw my Garmin charger in the bottom of my gym bag, I assumed my Garmin was also in the bag.  When I went rummaging for the Garmin before heading to Shelby Farms...no Garmin...I panicked...wondering where it could have gotten separated...but of course, I get home tonight and find it right where I left it on my bedside table!  So being Garmin-less, I just tried to put together my jog/walk intervals by jogging to a certain point...a bench..the pier.  I know I reached no new goal of jogging further before walking, but I am noticing that my legs seem to be stronger when going from walking to jogging in my jog/walk intervals.  Where my legs used to feel like jello when I first started to jog from walking in my intervals, transitioning from walking to jogging seems to be coming a little more fluidly and easily now, and that's enough to keep me wanting to do more!  After I had just begun my second round of Patriot Lake, I saw Tatumsmom as she drove in for her workout.

TGIF tomorrow!  It's been a LONG week even though it's only been a 4 day week!  Should have an on plan eating day tomorrow as I've already planned out and know what I'm going to eat.  Saturday will be 10 miles as I build my miles for my half marathon, so I will be a really happy camper when I can get those miles behind me!

I hope everyone has a great Friday, and start to the weekend!

Hump Day!

I hate it when you have a Monday off, and then Tuesday winds up being a delayed Monday!  But it was great to wake up this morning, and realize the week's halfway over!

Not much going on yesterday besides it seeming like a Monday work-wise.  I had an on plan day, and even though it rained and drizzled earlier in the day, by the time for me to go to jog/walk, it had stopped (RATS!)...with all the dreariness of the day, and it being cold, windy, and damp, I really was halfway hoping it would be pouring at 3:30.  It wasn't, so I changed clothes and headed to Shelby Farms...I was happy that I at least was going to potentially get in a "normal" workweek of my Shelby Farm workouts as either extreme cold or rain has wiped out at least one of my weeknights at Shelby Farms the last 2 or 3 weeks.

When I got to Shelby Farms, it was cold, windy, cloudy, and a few drizzle drops, and I contemplated just turning around and heading back to work.  LOL...can you tell I just really wasn't feeling it yesterday?  I stayed though, and started out jogging.  I didn't make it 1/2 mile this time...maybe .30 mile...but the damp, bone-chilling wind  was really working on me!  I finished my first mile at a 14:22 avg. pace, but by that time, my stomach was beginning to cramp.  I eat lunch around 1-1:30, so I had barely eaten 2 hours earlier, and I had also made a wrap with a yummy high fiber(12 gms fiber-80 calories!)whole wheat tortilla I had found at Costco, filled with veggies and chicken strips, so I think that all was working on me.  I had hoped to make my 2 rounds of Patriot Lake before having to  make a "pit stop",. but by the time I got back to the part of the trail in front of the visitor's center, I knew that wasn't happening!

After stopping, I was more comfortable, but couldn't really get back into my rhythm after having stopped, so I jogged/walked through the rest of the first 2 miles, and then walked the last 1.34 miles.  Although it wasn't one of my best times at Shelby Farms, I was glad I had gone ahead and done it once I was finished.

Of course, watched Biggest Loser when I got home last night, except for when I flipped over to AI when the little girl from Memphis...Alexis Grace...sang....OH...MY...GOODNESS!!!  She BETTER make it through!  As always, I'm so thrilled with this season of BL and just how well all of this season's contestants support each other!  It makes it so much more enjoyable to watch than to sit with my blood pressure rising like I was every episode last season!

Of course, after a cold, damp day yesterday, it WOULD be beautiful today!  I went out at lunch an hour ago, and it was sunny and 74 degrees with a great breeze...if it weren't for the breeze, it would have been downright warm!  Almost wished I would have brought my clothes to jog/walk this afternoon, because today feels like my good day I had last Thursday!  My legs will thank me though, for not going 2 days in a row...so I'll head back out again tomorrow when it's freezing again!

Hope everyone's having a great Hump Day!

A Decade

A "decade" of lbs. is all I have left to be in Onderland!  I had hoped from the time I got on the scale Thursday night, to the time I got on the scale Sunday morning that I would lose maybe another lb., but that was not to be...even after a 5k in the morning and then 4+ miles in the afternoon on Saturday.  But...I'm into the 2-single digits now, and looking forward to when I NEVER have to see the 2 as the beginning number of my weight again!

After my active day on Saturday, I thought it would be a piece of cake to fall asleep Saturday night.  Although my body was tired, my eyes just couldn't seem to stay shut!  I tossed and turned...turned on the light....read....nothing seemed to work, but I think I finally found my exhaustion point at about 2:45am!  It was my intention to get up and go to church, and then head to Shelby Farms for my regular "wind-down" 5 miles, but not falling asleep until almost 3am, I unset my alarm, and slept until almost 11am.  I hate when I do that...because I tend to stay in my PJ's all day when I sleep that late, and that is what I did!  No real physical activity of any kind...unless channel flipping counts!  Needless to say, all the inactivity seemed to lead to mindless munching, so yesterday was not a day I stuck within my calorie range.

I had today off, and it was my intention to sleep in...and for what would normally be a work day, I did...woke up around 8:30.  It was my original intention after going to have lunch with Tatumsmom, Kache, and Bethany, to go to Shelby Farms and do the 5 miles I didn't do yesterday, but somehow Kohl's and Ross were calling my name more loudly, and I passed on Shelby Farms!  Tomorrow is my regular weekday to go to Shelby Farms, so I will be falling back into my regular schedule anyway.

Kristin, Angela, and I all had today off, so since Bethany had to work, we met for lunch at a restaurant close to the area that Bethany works....called Eclectic Cafe.  We all had looked at the menu online before we went, so we pretty much already knew what we each were going to get.  They had a marinated portobella panini sandwich that was out of this world, with a green salad w/a yummy Italian viniagrette dressing...I will definitely be headed back there...I've been looking for a good portobella mushroom sandwich since one I had at Friday's several years back, and this one really lived up to my expectations!  It was great for us 4 Memphis EP'ers to be able to get together and catch up, and like every time, the time just seemed to pass too fast!

As I mentioned before, after lunch I headed to Kohl's and Ross which are located in the same shopping area.  It's so nice to try on Misses XL tops and jackets, and find they fit comfortably, and a couple were roomy enough that maybe I could have gone down to a Large...but I wanted to enjoy the roominess of something in a Misses size...a feeling I haven't had in a long, long, time!

While I was at Kohl's my middle older sister called.  After sending my oldest sister my before/now pictures from last week, I went ahead and sent them to my other sister...in our "sister" picture in the restaurant, she is the one on the left with short hair.  When I got back to my car after the 5k Saturday, she had called and left a message saying "OMG...I have seen the changes, but it took seeing those pictures to see just how far you've come and how great you've done!"  When she called me today, she said she had printed out my email, and took it to work to show all her coworkers.  She said they wanted me to write out what I did!  LOL...I told her it was no unique secret or plan...I allow myself 1500 calories a day, I walk/jog 4 days a week, and I told her probably the thing that had helped me most was keeping a food journal of everything I ate to keep me honest!  I've been inspired by people on EP and TBL that have successfully lost a lot of weight, but never think of myself as an inspiration to anyone else because I still have a long way to go!  It did make me feel good that maybe seeing what I have done so far might encourage someone else to start the journey!

Hope everyone had a great Monday, and have a great Tuesday!

Fun Day!-Valentine's Day 10k and 5k Run/Walk

I was so looking forward to today...not because it was Valentines Day, because I don't have a "hunny", and would just as soon skip over the day(I would be singing another song if it were otherwise!)...but getting to do my first race since the Turkey Trot 4-miler at Thanksgiving. And I was going to get to do it with everyone's favorite EP'er, Tatumsmom!

I had some nights this last week that I didn't sleep very well, so getting to bed by 10 last night and sleeping like a baby until 7 this morning was no problem for me, and I was glad to finally get a good night's rest before the 5k this morning. And I had done these before, so I didn't have the same apprehension Angela was having with this being her first race!  I got up, showered, ate me a whole wheat English Muffin with peanut butter a couple of hours before race time, and tried to decide how to layer...although we have had some really mild days the past week, a cold front had come through last night, and I could tell by the tree limbs swaying outside my bedroom window that it was going to be nippy!  I finally decided on a long sleeve thinner wicking top as my base, and then my Nike cold-weather mock turtleneck over that, with my  thin windbreaker vest to top it off.  Of course....long pants...can't see how some people were out in shorts!

As I pulled out of my complex and hit the highway headed toward the race, I realized out of all my preparation, I didn't throw my camera in my bag!  I could have turned around and gone back to get it, but I figured Tatumsmom was already freaking wondering whether I was going to show up since it was 30 minutes before the race, so I kept going.  Sure enough, Angela called as I was pulling into the parking lot of the Church Sponsoring the race to check on my progress.  That parking lot was already packed, so I had to drive out the back entrance to the church and park at a school across the street.  I found Angela, and got to meet her hubby JD, and her precious Tatum!  We wound up having to walk probably 1/4 mile or just a bit more to get to the start of our 5k...there was a 10k that started just a few minutes earlier and from a different spot.

Angela and I were walk/jogging this race, so we were trying to decide whether we were going to start out jogging, or walk and then jog.  Don't think we ever really made a decision before the horn sounded, but as the start signal sounded we decided to jog.  This was not a chip-timed race, so we were going to use my Garmin to keep track of our pace and progress.  I had my Garmin ready to click "Do Workout" when we crossed the start line, but I don't always remember after clicking "Do Workout" that I have to click again for the timer to actually start!  We had gone .04 miles(I thought it was longer, but as I stopped it at the end, we had gone 3.06 from the time I actually started the timer )before I realized that and started it!  The wind was blowing pretty briskly, and it was chilly!  We were passing in front of the church where JD and Tatum were standing with the camera, so I can't remember whether we were on a walk break, or jogging, but we decided we had to be running wherever there was a camera!

At about 1/2 mile in, I realized I either should have put some gum in my mouth to chew to keep my mouth moistened with saliva, or should have brought a water bottle, because between the wind and jogging, my mouth and throat already felt parched!  It seemed we were hitting all these little inclines, and then it seemed they got longer....not steep at all, but enough of a gradual long incline to get your heartrate up even more and give your hamstrings a workout!  I think we did pretty well deciding when we were going to run and when we were going to walk...I hope I didn't slow Angela down!

Of course when you see that first mile marker, it feels like it's going to take forever to finish, but after a water stop, and walk/jogging through a few more inclines, it looked like we were finally past the "hills", and in the home stretch.  As we rounded the corner to finish the last 1/2 mile, we could see the fire truck marking the finish, so we jogged and then realized we still had a little loop before heading down the straight-a-way to the end, so we walked for a bit, but at .20 out, started running to have that run across the finish line!  As we rounded the corner toward the fire truck, there was the clock, and it read 42:00-something, and we stepped it up....they haven't posted the results yet, but as we came across the finish line, the clock read 43:34...my trial "personal 5k" on Thursday I did 43:38, so we finished 4 seconds quicker today than what I did on Thursday!  Based on the distance I had my Garmin going...minus the .04 mile that I didn't...we averaged a 13:58 pace for the distance!

They had pizza and other goodies afterwards in the church, but I needed the water more, so I just had a bottle of water, and just ate lunch later. I went later on this afternoon to Shelby Farms to do additional distance...I had done 9 miles last Saturday for my long distance, but wanted to follow the training schedule that the Country Music 1/2 provided more closely since I really didn't stick to the schedule like I should when training for my first 1/2, so I dropped my total mileage today...schedule said 6 miles, but besides my 3.1 this morning, I did an additional 4.25 at SF for 7.35 total.  When I started, I tried to jog, but my quads were really burning and said "NO".......so I walked the 4 miles as briskly as I could!

I had a great time getting to do the 5k with Angela and getting to meet her hubby and Tatum, and her friends!  We talked about some other 5k's that are coming up that we both may sign up for.  I think we both now have a base from which to work with our time today, and I know I will work on gradually increasing my speed, and increasing my distance running without stopping...like we talked about today...I don't know when I may ever be able to run an entire 5k without stopping, if ever...but the challenge comes in at least trying!

Hope everyone had a great V-day!  Enjoy the rest of the weekend...for me...a 3 day weekend!  Will be meeting up with the Memphis EP'ers Angela, Kristin, and Bethany on Monday for lunch, so that will be fun!

YES!!!

Although this day was not without it's frustrations work wise, and traffic-wise,  it wound up being a GREAT day, and I feel like I'm still trying to come down off a high...maybe a very slight runner's high?

Traffic was horrible this morning.  A drive that should normally take me no more than 20 minutes took me more than an hour!  Thankfully, my boss trusts that out of the 8 years that I've been there and all the overtime I've worked, and the times when I have gotten there early on a regular basis, that I'm not going to cheat on my time, so he pretty much is always understanding and doesn't say anything.

Work was super-hectic...big boss wanting 2 projects at the same time, and me telling coworker to tell him if he could grow me 2 more arms and another brain, I might could accomplish the feat he wanted!

So I was excited to get away from work this afternoon to go to Shelby Farms, and like I did before my Race for the Cure 5k...run my own "Personal 5k" before the 5k that Tatumsmom and I are doing Saturday morning.  To be still over a month away from the beginning of Spring, the weather was absolutely gorgeous!  Temps were right around 63-65, the sun was shining, and there might have been a slight breeze...but perfect walking/jogging/running weather!

I started out jogging from the entrance of the trail and decided I would jog as far as I could...I have gone as far as .25 mile and even .35 mile at a time, but I wanted to see if I could push it a little further.  So I made it (without stopping to walk) from the entrance of the trail, around the west end of the lake, and to just past the pier on the other side of the lake for a total of 1/2 mile before I walked!  I looked at my Garmin as I slowed to walk, and it said I had done the 1/2 mile at a 12:34 avg. pace.

I decided that I would start my 1/10 miles intervals of walking/jogging, so after walking 1/10 of a mile, I started to jog again.  As I was approaching the end of my 1/10 jog interval, an older man that appeared to be in his late 60's/early 70's jogged passed me and said "You rock...you go!" and gave me the thumbs up!  LOL...I said thanks, and being motivated by seeing someone that age breeze past me, I decided I could at least jog another 1/10 of a mile!  I continued my 1/10 mile intervals through to the 3.1 mile mark when I stopped my Garmin...2 times around Patriot Lake is 3.34, but I wanted to make a trial run of our 5k on Saturday.  These were my Garmin stats:

Total time: 43:38/Average pace: 14:06/Calories burned: 400

  • Mile 1 - 12:49 avg. pace
  • Mile 2 - 14:33 avg. pace
  • Mile 3 - 14:58 avg, pace
  • .10 - 13.18 avg. pace

YES!!!  For me, my fastest 5k so far...I finished Race for the Cure in 46:29 from the time I crossed the starting mat to the finish mat, and I finished today almost 3 minutes faster...and I've NEVER in my recent history had an average pace in the 12 minute range...albeit just for the first mile, and I was thrilled that my average pace for the entire distance was just over 14 minutes!

Needless to say, I felt great when I finished, and kinda' felt that excitement and endorphin rush that seems to make you feel like you're just floating along!  Maybe not a full-fledged runner's high, but enough to leave me wanting more!

I've had an on plan week since last Thursday...my "AHA" moment earlier this week of seeing just how my body had changed has over the last few days kept me motivated to stay within my 1500 calories! Since I knew I had been on plan...I wanted to take a peek at the scale before I ate supper...just to see...and it was under 210...at 209!  I said I would not move my graph again until I got under 210, but I think I'm going to wait until Saturday morning or Sunday morning to see if that number lowers, but even if not...even at 209, I would be within 10 lbs. of ONDERLAND!!!

So for all today's frustrations, I had so much to be happy about before the day was over!  I still think I'm trying to wind down, and it's just before midnight!

TGIF in just about 20 minutes...and for some of us, the beginning of an extended weekend!  I hope everyone has a great Friday!
