Before After

I need a new plan - and some new meal ideas.

Hi guys. I'm still around.  I went through a bit of a rough patch a a few weeks ago and really broke down. I'd been trying so hard, despite numerous setbacks, and was using My Fitness Coach regularly for a week and a half or so when it had a bit of a glitch - it basically froze up in the middle of a workout and lost the data when we restarted it. That pissed me off as I didn't get credit for that workout but figured tough luck, I'll just start over. But when I tried to do that she wanted me to go through all the setup information first as though I was a new user. It still had my user data, it just wanted all the beginner tests redone, like resting heart rate, then for 2 minutes you do jumping jacks (or in my case step up and down on the step really fast because my knees won't let me do jumping jacks) and take the heart rate again. Well I'd done the damned test again and after the 2 minutes asked hubby to press the button on the controller for me so I could enter the results but he accidentally hit cancel and it went back to the beginning again. I was so damned frustrated that I just stopped - I wondered why all my efforts are in vain, why I bother to keep trying year after year when it's always the same. I get about 50 pounds off then I stall for a few months, then I go back up. Over and over. And I just let it all out. I mean I balled my eyes out and my wonderful hubby comforted and supported me and asked how he could help. He wouldn't have any bad foods in the house any more (unrealistic for him) and he'd buy a treadmill, and he'd do it with me. He's really great. But it didn't matter, I just said I'd tried everything already, how will switching to a treadmill help, and where would we put it, and why bother it'll just repeat another cycle, and on and on. And it took me a day or two to get over my little pity party, but get over it I did.

I had a business trip coming up and not knowing what to expect or where I'd be eating that week I figured it pointless to start anew at that time. So now that's behind me and it's back to normal again next week. But wait -- more trips? I've got 2 more trips in March, 1 in April, May, July and August so far that I know of.  And I'm sure more will be added soon, we're having to do a lot of presentations. So I really need to find a way to cope with being on the road and still have healthy eating options as much as possible.

Last week we only ate in our hotel once - my boss took us out for dinner the other nights. Lunches were often served at the presentations, but they never had decent vegetarian options, so I ended up walking down to a local cafe and grabbing a grilled veggie sandwich or something similar, but they generally had too much oil.  The only meal I felt I had control over was breakfast, because instead of stopping for a croissant and coffee before the meeting like the others, I had brought a bag of muesli and some soy milk in a long-life box with me on the plane. So I had a nice healthy breakfast to start off each day, but after that I had to choose from menus with very little healthy options.

So I've been trying to collect quick, easy, on-the-go kinds of meals that I can tuck in my bag for when we're on the road and have a quick healthy lunch with me. Something I don't need to refrigerate, preferably.  I've found these lean wrap recipes using mountain bread, and while they used grilled chicken I could substitute chickpeas or something. The other ingredients were thinly sliced grilled pumpkin slices, red onion, cucumbers, greens and snow pea sprouts with avocado. I'm not an avocado fan and I'd like some sort of dressing so I thought maybe use some of the chickpeas to make a low-fat hummus for the wrap and leave off the avocado.  Since there's no meat on it, maybe that would keep well enough in my bag for 3 or 4 hours?  I don't know, but I've got to come up with some ideas.

Dinners -- well I can find a grocery store close to wherever we're staying and stock up with some things I guess, but I hate to be the only one saying nah, you guys go to the restaurant, I'll stay here and make some salad. LOL Hubby suggested go along but always choose the healthiest option on the menu, asking them to leave stuff off if need be.  They should be willing to accommodate.  So I'm going to be planning out some menus again tomorrow and getting back on track next week.  Wish me luck.  Either way, I'll let you know how it's going. :)

So glad you are still here.

Your plans sound good.  And I used to go out with my team only once each week when we were away, the other nights I just said 'no thanks'.  It was actually because of the gluten free options, but you could plead 'dietary restrictions' I am sure!

Hang in there.....

Hi

I can relate to the pattern of getting started, runnng into problems with menus/exercise, feeling frustration and stopping the journey. It's so easy to do, especiall when the weight isn't coming off fast enough. Plus, having others in the house who want to eat junk makes it harder!

Just some ideas;

My other half and I have our own cabinets in the kitchen. He wants junk I don't need.  I tell myself that taking from his cabinet is like stealing, stealing from my goals.

I'm learning it's okay to be high maintainence at restaurants. And if it isn't done right, I speak up because it's going in MY body, I have a right to have it my way. I ask for all sauces and gravies on the side, so I have more control. I avoid cream sauces and stick to red sauces for pastas and such. If I am
want a salad that lists something like 'country fried chicken,' I ask for grilled chicken as a replacement. I've even gotten high maintainence when I splurge; I have my ice cream sundae's hot fudge in a separate container. It saves me a few hundred calories right there. If I want it, I put a little on for myself.

Picking food while traveling can be tricky. I pack a few things in my suitcase or buy them at the nearest grocery store; Fiber One bars or other granola, 1 serving fruits packs, cans of ravoli/soups etc. heat and eats (it's not a great choice but better than restaurant choices some times), canned chicken and other items that don't need a frig. I bring a can opener, silverware, and a dish to heat/mix stuff in.

Hang in there and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Sue
