We've decided to withdraw the offer :(
After getting lots of opinions (most of whom said the power lines would
NOT bother them in the least) and much discussion amongst ourselves all
weekend long, hubby and I have decided to withdraw our offer on the
house. It stinks, because there's so much about the house that we
really loved. But he just couldn't get past the proximity to the high
voltage pylons and the fact that the lines themselves would pass right
over our back fence. Even if he weren't worried about our own health,
he's worried about future resale potential if others would be leery to
buy the house. Or if at some point it's proven that they are a health
risk, he fears our house would be suddenly worth nothing.
I added that if, by chance, one of us were to get cancer down the line
it could be totally unrelated to living near these lines but in the
back of our minds we'd always wonder. Whether or not they pose a risk,
going into the purchase of a new home should be a joyous event, so if
he's going to be haunted by these nagging doubts, then it's best not to
buy it. So we are pulling the offer on Monday, and we'll just keep
saving and waiting for the right house to come along.
It's only disappointing because I'd gotten so excited about finally
having a place of our own, and one with a game room and pool no less!
But in actual fact we wondered if we weren't more drawn to those
features than to the house itself. I asked him, if it didn't have the
external game room and the pool -- would you still love the house
itself? He admitted he wouldn't. So I think it wasn't meant to be. So the search continues.
