2009 Goals
Here is what I would like to accomplish this year:
- Run 1000 miles. Over at the Runners World beginner’s forum I signed up for their 2009 in 20009 Challenge. In 2008 I ran 416 miles, but didn’t start tracking until April, and wasn’t really consistent until June. It’s a lofty goal, but I’m going to do my best.
- Complete at least 3 half marathons: Disney’s Princess Half (March 7), San Diego Rock n’ Roll Half* (May 31), St. Jude Half (December 5?)
- Complete 2 full marathons: Flying Pig (May 3), Nike (October 18?)
- Balance running with strength training. My strength training went by the wayside when I started training for the Nike Marathon, so I need to find a way to balance both.
- Get back to onederland. No other major weight loss goals – I just need to get back to under 200 lbs, and stay there.
- Blog more consistently, and comment/give support to my friends more often.
2009 is going to be a great year!!
*I am planning on mentoring with Team in Training for the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon. They don’t technically offer a half marathon, except for TNT participants.

Sounds like you have some awesome goals. Oh...I can't wait to meet you December 5th. Or the 4th if you come in that Friday.
I'm so excited for 2009!

Great Goals!
2009 IS going to be a great year for you! As long as I've read your blog, I haven't seen you set out to do anything you haven't accomplished, so I have no doubt you will reach your 1000 miles run, and all your other goals!

running and weight loss
Andrea N-- your progress never ceases to amaze me! What a healthy turnaround over time!!!!
Anyhow: I just wanted to give you my personal perspective on running and weight loss from MY experience.
I found it very hard to lose any weight while running long distances!! It sounds counterintuitive-- but all the running increased my appetite and food needs that my body just compelled me to eat more.
Looking back-- when I was doing alot of running training, I was loving it, but frustrated as to why I couldn't lose weight!!! But now, with more perspective, I see that I was physically needing more calories-- and without an olympic training coach or something-- I wasn't ever going to drop a pound.
I really respect my body for this, in many ways. We folks who tend to hold onto weight have a great survival mechanism-- we get into homeostasis and want to stay there.
So: all I wanted to say was lots of luck with your running goals and keep on keepin' on in 2009-- but if you are getting frustrated with trying to get back into the 100's, you may want to (gulp, I know it sounds nuts) cut back on your heavy training and just do basic cardio a few times a week so that your body doesn't MAKE you eat to sustain your current training weight.
Best of everything!! Vanessa
