Before After

10 Miles is Long!!

Since yesterday was a beautiful spring day here in Boston I decided to get out outside and run along the Charles River after work. Considering the Boston Run to Remember Half is a mere 17 days away I thought it would be a good idea to see what 10 miles would feel like. I mapped out approximately how far I would have to go along the Charles to hit 5 miles, and then I would turn around. Map My Run estimated I would have to go out to Harvard’s football stadium. So, I strapped on my Garmin and I was off.

Of course, there were a ton of people out running and riding their bikes. I felt pretty good most of the time – of course, there was much walking along with running. I made out to the football stadium and turned around. I felt okay up until around 7.5 miles and then noticed that my small toes on my left foot seemed to be smashed into the side of my shoe. By then I really needed to use the restroom, and running was making it worse, so I walked the rest of the way home.

I didn’t know what to do first when I got home – drink water, pee, stretch or eat!! I think I had some water, went to the bathroom, stretched and then had dinner. My legs were killing me though – I shuffled around the rest of the evening. They are feeling okay today.

So, I can almost visualize running/walking a half marathon. I did feel like I could continue on last night a little longer. The actual half will be better since I won’t have to wait for traffic lights when crossing the road, plus I won’t have bikes zipping past me on narrow walkways.

Next week I’m going to add 2 more miles, and I need to wear my wider shoes. I’m also going to need to get some sort of belt to carry water with me. I took a bottle of water with me but it’s annoying to have to hold it in my hand. I’ve been looking at the Nathan products and have been thinking about get this one. I’m a little wary of it though, due to the fact that I don’t really need anything to else to weigh me down – LOL! However, the ability to quench my unrelenting thirst is a little more important. Not sure what I can do about the bathroom issue. Hopefully there will be port-o-potties on the Run to Remember course (according the race website there will be aid stations every 2 miles – what a relief!).

Tonight is the Team in Training Fall Kickoff Event. Jerel is going with me - it’s at the Good Time Emporium – never been there, but it looks fun. I believe they will hand out the training schedule tonight – not sure if we start this week or next. When I spoke with the running coach she said we would be running at 8:00 am on Saturdays and at 7:30 am when it starts to get warmer. Luckily I’m a morning person!

I’m taking the day off from the gym, but I have a training session scheduled with Jane tomorrow. Saturday I may have TNT training, but I also have Pilates at 11:00, and on Sunday I’m running in a 5K in Somerville.  Saturday night Jerel and I are going to O Ya to celebrate his graduation.  I am ready for the weekend though - this week seems like it's gone on forever!

Have a great day!!

I have seen

belts that runners wear with 4 small bottles in the back, I think the idea is that you can fill up as many as you need for the length of your run to minimize how much extra weight you carry??

Training

the extra weight could add resistence....then when you do the event...don't carry the water...just get some at the stations...and the run will seem easier without the extra weight!...Just a thought.....not like I'm a big expert.

Speaking of map my run....I redid my usual run.....using the hybrid map....ah yeah...it's more like 1.86 miles......no wonder the pedometer wasn't logging 3.75 miles worth of steps...it was because I was only going 1.86 miles worth of steps....anyway...live and learn.

Sounds like you have a super busy weekend ahead of you.  We are going to a ball game tomorrow night....and working around the house the rest of the weekend.....more boxes to unpack!....plus we are going to start removing the wall paper upstairs in the two bedrooms and jack n jill bathroom.

Heya...

You totally amaze me!!!!  LOOK AT YOU GIRL!  That's so cool you got to meet TXlass.  I'm so jealous!  Great pics Andrea!!!  Thank you for sharing.  AND 10 miles???!!!  YOU ROCK!

I always run with water

Anything over 4 miles. Maybe it is a Type A control freak thing, but I need ot be self sufficient. I will refill at aide statrions, but I want water when I want water. Plus it is easier to drink out of the bottles than a cup while running.

Maybe if you are a 6 minute miler it will slow you down, but for penguins like us I seriously doubt it makes a difference. Dehydration DOES make a difference to everyone. Just my two cents!

Great job on venturing out on your first double digit run!
