Before After

Feeling Thinner but the numbers don't add up :(

So my weigh in this week was less than impressing :( I feel great and see my body changing but the numbers on the scale are not moving. Advice Please!!!!!

I have been sticking to my cardio workouts 5 days a week plus twice a week weight training with my trainer at Fitness Together.

I am def behind my goal now. Im thinkiong about going back to weight watchers.I have done it before an their program definetly works. I just am not sure if I can crame one more meeting each week into my schedule. Thoughts anyone ?????

I'm Famous !!!! Well....not really

The past week and a half has been great. We will see the results when I step on the scale on Monday. I am hoping for  a good loss.

I have really been focusing on my workouts. Cardio five or six days a week and weight training two days a week. Also, I have been trying to figure out things that my husband and I can do that are more active then just sitting around. Thankfully, this weekend we have a family get together. Running around after our three nephews and our niece should be active enough for us :) !

Check out this link. This is in addition to my post entitled Meet my Trainer. I'm in the video.

Weigh In #2 is MONDAY !!!!!

Traveling This Weekend ; My latest challenge

Let's face it....I like to eat !

I have always associated food with good times. I look forward to eating meals and I emotionally eat when I'm upset. These are all recipies for disaster :(

I am not sure how not to link food to feeling good. Any suggestions out there?

So this weekend is my fathers birthday. We are all travelign down to Washington DC to visit with him . This will be my first time traveling since starting the challenge.

I am a little worried...at my Dad's there is alwasy plenty of food and alcohol. Fortunatly, they have two dogs and a home gym with a treadmill so I won't be missing any cardio time. However, I do think it's going to be a challenge not to eat like a little piggy while everyone else is. My mindset right now is to stay strong and make sure I get in extra cardio each day just in case I splurge a little. No drinks for me at all...once I drink I lose all will power and eat whatever I want.

Wish me luck :) !

Meet My Trainer

 I LOVE MY TRAINER !!!!

I have had trainers in the past but Sue at Fitness Together in New Canaan is by far the best personal trainer I have ever worked with. The great thing is that her gym Fitness Together is a franchise so you should all check it out becuase there may be one in your area. Read below about the concept ....

Fintness Together :

Here you'll get a workout designed for you and you alone. You'll get a certified personal trainer who will push you just hard enough to get the results you've been looking for. And you'll do it all in the privacy of our beautiful training suites.

Established in 1996, Fitness Together has led the industry for one-on-one personal fitness training. The New Canaan, CT location is located right above my business so this is how I got introduced to the gym. I was a little hesitant at first becuase I have always worked out and trained in large gyms. Sue gave me one free session back in February and I have been there ever since. In the begining the goal was tone for my wedding in April. Now we are working towards my weight loss goal and overall fitness level.

Sue keeps my workouts challenging. We work on core strength and balance, as well as all of the other major muscle groups. Once I think I have mastered something she gives it a twist to keep it challenging for me.

If you want more information about Fitness Together New Canaan you can visit Sue's website at www.Fitnesstogether.com/newcanaan

Weigh in #1

Today was my first offical weigh in ! I lost 4.6 pounds !!!! Yay !

I feel like these results are typical for the first week.  I know I will really have to step up my workouts this week to maintain a loss like that for next weeks weigh in.

When I reflect back on this week I feel good about what I accomplished. I was able to make it to the gym for 5 good workouts three of those being sessions with my trainer Sue from Fitness Together in New Canaan ( more to come about Sue ....she is great). Plus this weeked we had our big sidewalk sales at my store so I was lifting and moving  a lot over the weekend.

I really focused on the food portion this week also. I tried to have fresh fruit for breakfast each morning, a green salad or fresh cut veggies for lunch, and a good dinner. I have been trying out some new recipies ( more to come on recipies ) !

Overalll a great start ! I am celebrating the success but moving forward to a new week !

Day 2 & What is Hypothyroid

Wow! I am so excited about the reponse and support I have gotten so far. So many friends have offered positive advice and words of encouragement. It's definetly motivating me even more so THANK YOU everyone .

Part of my Blog is going to be about struggles that I have had and continue have on my weight loss journey.

Today I want to address HYPOTHYROID.....yeah try and say it three times fast. This diagnosis has been part of my life since I was 11 so I'm pretty used to it by now.

As an 11 year old I weighed about 190 pounds.....yes even more than I do now at 29 and 5 foot 9 inches. So as you can imagine I was not a cute kid at that age. My parents would try and make me exercise and my mother would even take me to her step aerobics class ( step was really big in the 90's) but I couldn't seem to lose any weight.

Finally, my mother dragged to me to the pediatrician and forced them to run a TSH test. Both my mother and grandmother had Hypothyroid and my mom was convinced that this could be part of the problem. The doctor protested and basically said that I was a lazy child who was eating to many cookies and watching to many episodes of the smurfs! Despite her protest she finally  relented and gave me the test. The results came in a few days later and proved that I was extremely Hypothyroid which means that my metabolism is three times slower than a normal person! I was immeadiatly prescribed synthroid and still take this pill every day.

So you may be asking yourself ......what is Hypothyroid ? Well here you go:

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone.

(This is the scientific term.....as a child I thought of it a stupid disease that was making me FAT ! )

It took me years to realize that if I took my pills daily my thyroid would regulate. However, I was always going to have to work out  and eat right otherwise the other symptoms of the condition would indirectly cause me to gain weight and gain it fast.

Symptoms

Early symptoms:

  • Being more sensitive to cold
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Fatigue or feeling slowed down
  • Heavier menstrual periods
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Paleness or dry skin
  • Thin, brittle hair or fingernails
  • Weakness
  • Weight gain (unintentional)

Late symptoms, if left untreated:

  • Decreased taste and smell
  • Hoarseness
  • Puffy face, hands, and feet
  • Slow speech
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Thinning of eyebrows

Some of these symptoms are worse than others for me. Really the worst symptom on the list is the weight gain follwed closely by the sensitivity to cold temps ( i'm always cold).

Treatment- Again the scientific treatment

The purpose of treatment is to replace the thyroid hormone that is lacking. Levothyroxine is the most commonly used medication. Doctors will prescribe the lowest dose that effectively relieves symptoms and brings the TSH level to a normal range. If you have heart disease or you are older, your doctor may start with a very small dose.

Lifelong therapy is required unless you have a condition called transient viral thyroiditis. Yes LIFELONG- this is never going away :(

You must continue taking your medication even when your symptoms go away. When starting your medication, your doctor may check your hormone levels every 2 - 3 months. After that, your thyroid hormone levels should be monitored at least every year. ( this means routine bloddtests :( )

Important things to remember when you are taking thyroid hormone are:

  • Do NOT stop taking the medication when you feel better. Continue taking the medication exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • If you change brands of thyroid medicine, let your doctor know. Your levels may need to be checked.
  • Some dietary changes can change the way your body absorbs the thryoid medicine. Talk with your doctor if you are eating a lot of soy products or a high-fiber diet.
  • Thryoid medicine works best on an empty stomach and when taken 1 hour before any other medications. Do NOT take thyroid hormone with calcium, iron, multivitamins, alumin hydroxide antacids, colestipol, or other medicines that bind bile acids, or fiber supplements.

So there it is .....Hypothyroid in a nut shell. Basically, I have to be extra carefull with diet and exercise and get routine bloodtests to check my levels.

Hopefully, this information will help some of you self diagnose. If you think you have Hypothyroid you should talk to your physician and ask for them check your TSH during your next routine blood test.

30 lbs by 30 Starts Today !

Let me just start by saying that I have never done a blog before. If my posts are random, missing words, and have bad grahmer and spelling sorry in advance.

This Blog is about me and my weight loss journey. My goal is to lose 30lbs by my 30th birthday in October. That's 12 weeks away so my plan is to try and lose 2.5 pounds each week. I have even recruited my husband Martin to join me in this challenge.

All About me

My name is Nicole. I am 29 years old. I have struggled with my weight my entire life. As a child I was teased and I can even remember being called "donut" by Doug Shultz  this punk who lived in my midwestern nieghborhood. As a result I was an emotional wreck as a child and still struggle daily with self confidence and defensivness.

By the time I was in high school I had tried all the diet fads including pills, drinks, and even laxatives which have had permanent effects on my body. I lost the weight and was able to keep it off pretty much for all of my high school years but the weight crept back on plus some in my 20's.

I recently got married and really want to lead a healthy and active lifestyle with my husaband Martin. Not to mention that I want to look HOT for my 30th birthday party :)

Hoepfully there are others out there like me. This blog will be my story of not only this daily challenge but also about my life.
